ICYMI:
Dear Jim and Camille,
Anyone who knows my running mates Danyel, Frank and I, knows that we will bring experience, balance and transparency to the Maywood Council.
What most people may not know is the reason why I am running (again) for Council. Frankly, I was content to be on the sideline, but something changed shortly after the current administration took over control of the Council. Since January it has been one disappointment after another for my family and many other families as well. This is what compelled me to run.
Our biggest disappointment is the Maywood Pool, which my family was very much looking forward to enjoying this summer. However, it was obvious the Mayor and Council had no intention of opening the pool. There seemed to be no plan in place, and it was not until a social media poll was created to show them that 85% of the Maywood residents who responded wanted the pool to open. The governing body appeared to have panicked, and hastily came up with a plan, but made it very clear that they would not open the pool if any additional taxpayer money needed to be spent in doing so. With this in mind, their plan raised the registration fees so high that most hard-working Maywoodians could not afford to join. Sadly, Maywood was one of only a few towns in Bergen County to not open their municipal pool this summer.
Soon after the pool fiasco, the Mayor and Council terminated a proven, experienced and cost-conscious administrator in Roberta Stern. Then they replaced her, not with one of the several overqualified applicants that they received (Mayor’s own words), but with an unproven person with no prior experience in the position and for thousands of dollars of additional taxpayer money! It begs the question as to why the Mayor and Council took such a hard stance on not spending additional taxpayer money on opening the pool only to turn around and spend additional taxpayer money on a new administrator.
I was also extremely disappointed by the Administration’s response to the tropical storm this past August with main roads being closed for days and traffic dangerously diverted onto residential streets. Spring Valley road was closed for three days until my dog Bella almost got hit by a car which then required me to get involved. It took social media posts and several phone calls to get the tree taken care of and the road reopened. It should never have reached the point where I as a private resident had to step in and take care of something that our elected officials should have taken care of.
While I personally like and respect each member of the Council, there appears to be something missing. Too many situations like this are sneaking up on this administration, and so that is why I decided to run for Council.
Unfortunately, right now there is a lack of experience on the Council. Frank Morrone and I have 10 years of Council experience between us, and Danyel Cicarelli has 6 years of experience on Maywood’s Board of Education.
There is also a lack of balance on the Council. Maywood has always been a politically diverse town, and therefore the Council should represent many different points of view.
And lastly, I believe there is a lack of transparency on the Council. Sometimes the hard questions are not asked when everyone is a member of the same party.
With everything going on in the world right now and with things remaining uncertain, Maywood needs the experience, balance and transparency that Danyel, Frank and I will bring to the Maywood Council.
