This recent arrest by the Sheriffâs Police Organized Retail Crime Unit brings a new meaning to âhotâ pink.
On June 12, Lululemon employees notified investigators of a theft at their store in the 900 block of West Randolph Street in Chicagoâs West Loop neighborhood. Two women had entered the store, grabbed bright pink and white clothing, and left without paying. Unbeknownst to the pair, the merchandise had trackers on them, and investigators followed the items to the 9700 block of South Merrill Avenue in Chicago. Investigators saw two women get out of the car who matched the descriptions of the offenders. Investigators took both women, identified as 22-year-old Jamyah Smith and 19-year-old Gyliah Johnson into custody as well as the male driver. They also recovered about $4,000 worth of clothing from the vehicle. Smith and Johnson were both charged with felony retail theft, and Johnson was additionally charged with criminal trespass for violating an order to stay out of Lululemon. After further investigation, the driver was released without charges.
Both women attended first appearance hearings on June 13 at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse, where they were ordered released on these charges. Johnson, however, remains in Cook County Jail custody for violating conditions of pretrial release for a previous retail theft and aggravated battery of a peace officer case.
The public is reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
