This St. Patrick’s Day, spread the word: The Luck o’ the Irish won’t save you from drunk, high or drug-impaired driving

Maywood, IL – St. Patrick’s Day will be here before we know it, bringing parades, parties, green beer and more to communities throughout the state. To remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving and to help keep our streets safe, Maywood Police Department is teaming up with the Illinois State Police and Illinois Department of Transportation for a stepped-up traffic safety campaign running March 13 through 6 a.m. March 23.

“With St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Tuesday this year, we expect celebrations throughout the entire week — plus the weekends before and after,” said Chief Elijah Willis. “We urge everyone to celebrate responsibly. Plan ahead for a sober ride home before you leave the house — your safety and the safety of others depend on it.”

During the enforcement period, the Maywood Police Department will be looking for drivers impaired by alcohol and cannabis along with other drugs, including prescription medications that can affect driving. Officers will also be stepping up seat belt enforcement, particularly at night when seat belt usage rates are lowest. Speeding, distracted driving and all traffic laws will be strictly enforced.

Whether you’re attending a party, hosting friends or going out to a bar, keep safety at the forefront. When it’s time to leave, make sure your designated driver is sober. Remember that walking or biking while impaired — whether by alcohol, cannabis or other drugs — can also be dangerous, so choose a sober friend to go with you. Designated drivers: Be alert for impaired walkers who may not obey street signs. It’s not about luck; it’s about smart decisions.

Other important tips:

· Drunk, high or otherwise impaired — it doesn’t matter. It is never okay to drive impaired. Designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely.
· If you see an impaired driver on the road, call 911 and report it.
· Have a friend who is about to drive impaired? Take the keys away and help them get a safe ride home.
· Always buckle up!

The St. Patrick’s Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High. Get a DUI” enforcement campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered by IDOT.

Maywood Police Department reminds drivers:
This Thanksgiving, buckle up and drive sober

Maywood, IL — This Thanksgiving, Maywood Police Department is joining the Illinois State Police and local partners to keep holiday travel safe. Our “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaigns run from Nov. 21 to Dec. 2. Officers will be looking for seat-belt violations, speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving due to alcohol or drugs, including cannabis.
“Thanksgiving brings more vehicles, longer trips and more festivities,” said Chief Willis. “Seat belts remain one of the simplest and most effective ways to save your life in a crash. We’re asking every driver and passenger to buckle up, every trip, every time — and to make a plan for a sober ride before the celebrations begin. If you drink alcohol or use cannabis, don’t drive.”
Plan ahead with these tips:
• Before you go out, choose a sober driver or plan to use a taxi, public transit or a rideshare service (Uber, Lyft, etc.).
• If you host, offer alcohol‑free beverages and help guests arrange sober transportation.
• If you’ve used cannabis, do not drive. Effects can be delayed and impair reaction time and judgment.
• If you see an impaired driver on the road, pull over safely and call 911.
• Make sure everyone in the vehicle wears a seat belt. It’s your best defense against an impaired driver.
This Thanksgiving enforcement effort is supported by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and aligns with Illinois’ statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Click It or Ticket” and “It’s Not a Game” campaigns.

The Village of Maywood celebrates National First Responders Day. It's a profound moment for our nation to pause and express our deepest gratitude for the heroic men and women who serve as first responders.

This day honors the unwavering courage, selflessness, and dedication of firefighters, police officers, sheriff's deputies, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), paramedics, 911 dispatchers, and other emergency personnel who stand on the front lines, ready to answer the call in moments of crisis.

In the face of danger, uncertainty, and chaos, first responders run toward harm's way, providing immediate aid, comfort, and protection. They are the essential link between a sudden emergency and safety, embodying the very best of the American spirit through their commitment to public service.

On this day, we recognize not only their incredible acts of bravery but also the daily toll their demanding profession takes on their lives and the lives of their families. Their work is a constant sacrifice, and we owe them a debt of gratitude that can never be fully repaid.

To all our nation's first responders: Thank you. Your tireless efforts ensure the safety, security, and well-being of our communities every single day. We honor your service, your sacrifice, and your dedication to saving lives.
