UPDATE: 2:25 p.m. June 10, 2026

No injuries were reported following a structure fire in the 1000 block of South Main Street that prompted a large response from the McAlester Fire Department on Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were dispatched at approximately 6:25 a.m. after reports of smoke coming from the top of a building. First-arriving crews reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof.

The fire was successfully contained to the affected structure and did not spread.

The building sustained extensive damage throughout most of the structure, with a large portion of the roof collapsing during the incident. Due to safety concerns and the instability of the remaining structure, firefighters were required to bring down the remainder of the building.

Main Street has reopened to traffic, and all road closures associated with the incident have been lifted.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The City of McAlester appreciates the professionalism of responding crews and the patience of residents and motorists during the incident.

The McAlester Fire Department is currently responding to an active structure fire in the 1000 block of South Main Street, and motorists are asked to avoid the area while crews continue firefighting operations.

Firefighters were dispatched at approximately 6:25 a.m. after reports of smoke coming from the top of a building. First-arriving crews reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof. Firefighters initially conducted an interior fire attack before conditions required crews to transition to defensive operations. The fire scene remains active.

The following road closures are currently in effect:

• Main Street closed from Ottawa Avenue to Modoc Avenue
• Second Street closed from Seneca Avenue to Creek Avenue

Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes and use caution near the area. Please do not enter barricaded areas or interfere with emergency operations.
