McAllen Economic Development Corporation is pleased with what can be accomplished when we come together to solve a binational problem. Working together with Reynosa Index Association Membership, the Hidalgo-McAllen International Bridge Board, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Hidalgo County Health Department has executed the Essential Economic Trade Initiative. This team has successfully administered Covid vaccines, to over 5,000 INDEX workers on American soil.

The vaccines are those that are about to expire and are being used to support this important economic engine in South Texas and Northwestern Mexico.

“This just shows what can be accomplished when we all come together to solve a regional health crisis and do the right thing.” – Keith Patridge, McAllen EDC President, and CEO.

Congratulations to the McAllen International Airport and City of McAllen TX Government. Today Congressman Vicente Gonzalez announced the allotted amount of $5,420,590 in grant funding from the American Rescue Plan to support the McAllen International Airport.

“As we ramp up travel operations, these funds will help our airport employees, essential workers and travelers’ transit safely and provide the necessary resources to prevent, prepare for, and respond to circumstances related to the pandemic,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “This past year we did our part and stayed home to stop the spread, but that meant those in the travel industry suffered as travel slowed to its lowest level in decades. I was proud to support the American Rescue Plan and the relief it provides to South Texas communities and businesses.”

“The American Rescue Plan grant allocation for the McAllen International Airport is going to help spur the airport’s recovery,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. “I’m grateful to Cong. Gonzalez and all of our federal elected officials who helped support a plan that will help alleviate the toll t the pandemic has had on critical transportation infrastructure like our airport.”

“The City of McAllen is committed to going above and beyond to protect the health of residents and visitors who utilize our airport. We will continue to work diligently to ensure that these funds are utilized to continue these efforts” said McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E.

Cong. Gonzalez announced $5,622,590 in grants from the American Rescue Plan to support airports in the 15th District of Texas recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Grant allocations for airports in the 15th District of Texas:
• McAllen International Airport: $5,420,590
• South Texas International Airport at Edinburg: $32,000
• Jim Hogg County Airport in Hebbronville: $22,000
• New Braunfels Airport: $148,000

The $8 billion in Airport Rescue Plan grants will provide economic relief to airports around the country affected by the pandemic to keep workers employed, continue improvement projects and help our aviation industry recover.

McAllen EDC is pleased to support the efforts of Index Reynosa who is looking to immunize essential workers from maquilas within the Reynosa, Tamaulipas, MX region on U.S. soil.

Today Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez, City of McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos and Consul de Mexico Froylan Yescas Cedillo announced the Essential Economic Trade Initiative.

This program was created to boost and strengthen the supply of goods between the U.S., and Mexico border by providing single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines to Maquiladora employees working in Reynosa.

“The vaccine program will help protect employees of our largest trading partner from contracting the virus, and will allow our business relations to strengthen the economy,” said Judge Cortez. “It’s imperative that we work together so we can soon return to economic normalcy.”

Vaccines will be administered by the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services at the county’s port of entry on U.S. soil. All vaccines are near expiration and will ensure the continuous delivery of goods to McAllen=based manufacturing companies.

Initially, 3,000 doses will be available and more doses will be provided as they become available.
