One of our summer interns, Blake, found this very uncommon Clench's Greenstreak while doing butterfly surveys in the park this morning. Even though they are thought to host on a common plant (Retama - Parkinsonia aculeata), there are only 49 observations of them in Texas, all from the Rio Grande Valley.

While out and about in the park, other staff photographed Curve-winged Metalmark - another uncommon, but more frequently seen butterfly - along with a Dusky-blue Groundstreak. The groundstreak is interesting in that their caterpillars feed on decaying leaves. Another reason to leave some fallen leaves in your garden, along with their ability to enrich soils and act as free mulch!

The summer is here and we'll be kicking off our 7th season of Flashlight Nights at Quinta Mazatlan! This program is a great way to meet cool wildlife, get outside when its cooler after dark, and see Quinta Mazatlan in a different light.

Flashlight Nights is offered on Tuesdays, June - August, with the tours starting at 8:30 PM. Make sure you register in advance, as the tours fill up quickly! Visit the following link for more information and to purchase admission.
