Happy Earth Day! Just got back from visiting an amazing ranch that will soon be added to our list of protected properties.

The recent freeze and lack of rain has made the landscape a little gray and drab...but hopefully that will change.

Support for land stewardship and wildlife conservation is a commonality among many Texans, especially when it includes advocating for iconic species such as the endangered ocelot. In the February 2021 issue of Texas Wildlife, Katy Baldock’s Saving Texas Ocelots: A Race Against Time, explains the efforts private landowners are leading to make ocelot conservation and recovery in South Texas a success story.

Winter Storm Uri Wildlife Deaths

Texas Parks and Wildlife is collecting data on the impact of Winter Storm Uri on wildlife. Through iNaturalist, you can enter in your observations of any dead animals that you suspect died due to the cold. Many bats have been found underneath bridges and others have seen wildlife around their own communities that were impacted by the cold. This week is National Invasive Species Awareness week! The term invasive is used for species that aggressively grow and reproduce rapidly, displace native species, and cause major damage to the areas in which they are present. In south Texas, an infamous invasive species is the wild pig. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reported that there is estimated $118.8 million in damages caused by wild pigs in Texas every year.

A recent study by Texas A&M University-Commerce, Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, and East Foundation scientists tracked wild pig movements and population structure, using wild caught pig DNA, to see how gene flow responded to features on the landscape (hills, plains, habitat and soil types, etc.) and whether these features could be used as barriers or corridors to help inform wild pig control. They found no landscape features to function as natural barriers to wild pig movements because wild pigs were regularly transported by humans. To decrease wild pig damages and control populations, human-mediated dispersion must be reduced. To read more about this wild pig study visit: https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/11/1/168

East Foundation

The winter burn season is here! The East Foundation plans to control burn approximately 1,000 acres on our El Sauz ranch between now and the end of February. The planned burn will take place along HWY 186 outside of Port Mansfield, Texas. Our prescribed fire effort is part of a large-scale, long-term study to better understand how this carefully managed form of natural disturbance contributes to nutrient cycling, increased biodiversity, the reduction of brush, and slowing the spread of non-native species. When you see smoke rise on the horizon over the next several weeks near Port Mansfield, know that the East Foundation is constantly striving to do what is right by the land, and to apply effective and sustainable management tools that will benefit the land and the life that depends on it.

Ruth Hoyt and the Valley Land Fund have partnered again to provide a series of new, free, educational opportunities for youths in the Rio Grande Valley.

This season's first three virtual workshops have been designed to provide a way for participants to interact through photographic challenges. Prizes will be awarded at the following scheduled workshop.

Children ages 8-18 years can participate in these virtual youth photography programs on Zoom. These monthly programs take place on three Saturdays, from 10:00-10:30am. The first three sessions are to be held January 23, February 13 and March 13, 2021.

To participate, children must be registered in advance. Register your children online today by contacting Ruth Hoyt via email at [email protected] or by calling the Valley Land Fund office at (956) 686-6429. If you call, please leave a detailed message along with your phone number so we can return your call. Pre-registration ensures your child a spot in the workshop.

This series of youth programs is made possible through the generous support provided by the Robert L. Townsend Endowment.

** Calling all nature and conservation enthusiasts ** Everyone is welcome to join this free Workshop to learn all about the City Nature Challenge: What it is and how to participate. Its fun, free and as easy as snapping pictures of plants and animals with your phone!! Details below!!
Is there a detailed map that shows the Valley Land Fund Migratory Bird Sanctuary (LTC 036) on South Padre Island? I am unable to pinpoint exact locations available to the public - by comparing pins on ebird and stxmaps.com with Google maps in satellite image mode. Thanks!
Why did you give up the legacy of Salineno?! You cannot be trusted stewards of ANY conservation land. THIS IS BEYOND TRAGIC. WHY DID YOU SELL?!!
Disappointed that you sold a pristine birding area for a wall that does not work. This will destroy a place that is loved by people nation wide. I am appalled at your lack of effort to protect this jewel along the Rio Grande River. What happened to your stated goals of "preserving native wildlife and a commitment to educating the public about the importance of land conservation and protection of our natural resources?"
Shame on you for selling out Saliñeno. What a travesty! You were entrusted with preserving that land for nature. Instead you just rolled over without a fight. Cowards! Your organization lost its credibility.
Can you tell me why on Election Day, November 3rd, 2020, the Valley Land Fund sold acreage used as a bird sanctuary to the US government for continued construction of a border wall? What was the selling price? What will be done with these funds? Thank you.
Why did you give up Salineno without a fight?! WHY?!
Care to comment on why you sold Salineno for the wall? Was it an offer you couldn't refuse?
Valley Land Fund. Please help us understand your decision regarding Salineno.
The Valley Land Fund: Please don't sell one centimeter of the Salineno Wildlife Refuge for the border wall! #NoWall
My son had lots of fun at your youth photography workshop. Thank you
