The Moonville Rail Trail Association is a non-profit, all volunteer organization, which was established in April, 2001 in order to build and maintain the muscle-powered Moonville Rail Trail. The Moonville Rail Trail extends from a

bit west of the Village of Zaleski, through the hills of Vinton County, and ends in scenic Athens County near Mineral. We hope to someday connect the Moonville Trail to the Athens County Hockhocking Adena Bike Path. The Moonville Rail Trail Association works to preserve local history as well as the beautiful environment. We work to maintain the trail, assist the surrounding communities in promoting education, tourism, and economic development and create an awareness of the needs of different muscle-powered user groups.

The Moonville Rail Trail Association has scheduled 2 volunteer trail maintenance days for fall: Saturday, September 12 and Saturday, October 3. The focus will be cutting back shrubs and saplings encroaching on the trail. September 12: meet at the Zaleski trailhead/parking area at 10 am. Bring along power tools or appropriate hand tools. October 3: location TBD. PLEASE consider attending one day (or both!) to give back to the trail in a community of trail lovers.

Due to recent weather events, at least one tree is down along the Moonville Rail Trail. This photo was taken yesterday at Bridge 9. Our volunteers will try to get out there today to clear it up, but please be patient.

The Moonville Rail Trail Association is confident that the hornet nests on bridge 2 out of Zaleski have been eradicated and the trail should be safe in that area. There could potentially be some angry hornets lurking, so hikers, cyclists, and riders should exercise caution, just in case.

CAUTION! The hornet nest on bridge 2 has expanded remarkably in the past few days; it is now the size of multiple basketballs, and Its location makes it very dangerous. The hornets are agitated and aggressive. Our volunteers are working at night to remove the nest, but it will take a number of visits. Until further notice, the bridge should be avoided!

Warning! There is a large, active hornet nest on bridge #2 heading north on the Moonnville Rail Trail from Zaleski. Its location has made it hard to knock down, and spraying/dusting apparently was ineffective. It will be gone on Monday, but this weekend trail users should exercise caution.

As of NOW, the Moonville Tunnel is back open for cyclists, horses, and hikers. Thanks to all for your patience the last few days. The contractor will return before the weekend to collect some remaining debris, but nothing should prevent easy passage from one end to the other.

We have added a tab on our website, visitvintonohio.com for The Moonville Rail Trail Association. We have included all of the information that was available on the vintoncounty.com website and added some new content. Under the minutes page all of the past minutes are available up to the June meeting. (For those not familiar, minutes from each month are approved at the next meeting. So they are always behind a month).
For those who may be unfamiliar with the Rail Trail Association. They are a non profit all volunteer organization who maintain, preserve and improve the Moonville Rail Trail.
