The Moonville Rail Trail Association is a non-profit, all volunteer organization, which was established in April, 2001 in order to build and maintain the muscle-powered Moonville Rail Trail. The Moonville Rail Trail extends from a

bit west of the Village of Zaleski, through the hills of Vinton County, and ends in scenic Athens County near Mineral. We hope to someday connect the Moonville Trail to the Athens County Hockhocking Adena Bike Path. The Moonville Rail Trail Association works to preserve local history as well as the beautiful environment. We work to maintain the trail, assist the surrounding communities in promoting education, tourism, and economic development and create an awareness of the needs of different muscle-powered user groups.

If you were unable to volunteer last Saturday with trail maintenance, but would like to help with trail work, here is another opportunity: SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 10 AM at the Moonville Tunnel. We need 5 or 6 people to walk up to the top of the east parapet and clear brush so we can take the first steps in the planned drainage improvement project. The climb is not terribly challenging, but the path is narrow and quite brushy, and it has rocks and roots. There are a few steep steps up and down. If you think this is something you can do and would like to participate, please RSVP in the comments.
You will need to bring along:
- clippers, loppers, or a saw
- good garden gloves (think multiflora rose)
- insect-proofing for clothing and/or body
- long pants and long sleeves for protection

A huge shout out to volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 53 and Moonville Rail Trail Association for their work on the trail surface on Saturday! We cleared a 1-mile section of ballast along the Zaleski wetlands so that horses, cyclists, and hikers can experience a much more agreeable surface! Thanks to all who came out to rake!

Water Lily Report: We have blooms!

These pink fragrant water lilies are real show stoppers! Although they naturally are white, this cultivar has been blooming here for quite some time. If you are paddling around, note the classic, round leaves and lift one up to see the purple-red tint underneath. They just started last week and will continue to bloom over the next couple of month.

Please keep in mind that although they are beautiful, they are also serve as an important part of the ecosystem as food and shelter for many organisms, so leave them where they are happiest and healthiest: in Lake Hope.
