Are you noticing unusual damage, dying branches, or declining trees in your woodland? Join A DAY in the WOODS: Diagnosing Forest Insects and Diseases to learn how to identify the signs and symptoms of Ohio’s most common forest pests and diseases. This hands-on workshop will help woodland owners build foundational knowledge, strengthen diagnostic skills through symptom recognition, and learn practical steps for developing effective pest management plans to protect the health and productivity of their woods.

All are welcome to join this worshop on Friday September 11th at Hocking State Forest Headquarters located at 19275 State Route 374, Rockbridge, OH 43149.

This program runs from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Please use the address above to find the meeting location. Once near the meeting location, please follow the yellow “A DAY in the WOODS” signs to the exact meeting location.

It's tick season here in Ohio!

Ohio is home to three common tick species: American dog ticks, black-legged (deer) ticks, and lone star ticks. Black-legged and lone star ticks can carry diseases that affect people, so it’s important to take precautions any time you’re hiking, hunting, or spending time outside.

Help prevent tick bites by:
• Wearing long pants and tucking them into your socks or boots
• Using a permethrin-treated repellent on clothing and boots
• Checking yourself, your family, and your pets for ticks after spending time outdoors
• Removing ticks promptly with fine-tipped tweezers

If you find a tick and aren’t sure what it is, you can submit it to your local health department for identification.
Remember, deer are not harmed by Lyme disease, and Lyme disease cannot be spread by eating venison. However, hunters should be especially careful when dressing deer, as ticks may still be present.

🌿 Learn to identify the shrubs growing in your woods! Join us on August 28 for a bonus A DAY in the WOODS workshop focused on Shrub Identification at the University of Rio Grande.

This hands-on workshop will help you identify native and invasive shrubs, improve your woodland stewardship skills, and prepare to recognize shrubs—even during the winter months! The program runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the $20 registration fee includes lunch and program materials.

Join us for an upcoming A DAY in the WOODS workshop focused on Tree Identification, where you’ll gain hands-on experience learning to recognize a wide variety of trees and shrubs found in southeastern Ohio woodlands.

This workshop will contain both indoors hands-on activities using a Tree ID Key and opportunities to see and talk Tree ID in the woods with experienced professionals. The focus of the July 24th “A DAY in the WOODS” workshop will be focused on “Tree Identification”. At the end of this workshop participants will:

• Understand the basics of Tree Identification
• Understand the differences between native and invasive species
• Prepare to successfully identify trees during the winter months
