Join us tomorrow for our 18th-century Living History Saturday as we explore how tradesworkers contributed to their communities beyond their craft! This Saturday will highlight America's 250 with a militia demonstration at noon.

In the Backcountry, especially during the conflict between Patriots and Loyalists, able-bodied men served in local militia units to help protect their neighbors and support their communities. This program will highlight that important role through a demonstration of basic militia drills, with opportunities for visitors to participate, followed by the firing demonstration of an authentic flintlock musket.

- Reuben Lacey’s Horse

Edward Lacey, Junior was one of the Patriot leaders at the Battle of Huck’s Defeat which occurred on July 12, 1780. His brother, Reuben was a Loyalist in Capt. Huck’s loyalist militia. Reuben was blind in one eye. According to tradition his horse and dog were also!

Prior to the battle of Huck’s Defeat, Edward Lacey decided to take advantage of his brothers’ visual impairment in order to gain insight into the layout of Huck’s Camp. In the early morning hours of July 12, he waited on the roadside for his brother to return home from Huck’s Camp. When Reuben arrived, Edward Lacey called out to him, pretending to be one of Huck’s loyalist militia. In the darkness, Reuben could not identify his brother and was duped into disclosing information about Huck’s camp.

Come out to see the events that led to the Battle of Huck’s Defeat on July 11 & 12 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. There will be two different battle reenactments: The Battle of Eutaw Springs on July 11 and The Battle of Huck's Defeat on July 12! Tickets on sale SOON! 🇺🇸

Bonnets and hats were important accessories for women all year round, but especially for summer! A bonnet kept the sun off one’s face and hair in place! If a bonnet became shabby or behind the times, it could be easily refreshed at home with ribbons, flowers, feathers, ruffles, or it could be completely overhauled - stripped down to the bonnet form and re-covered with totally different fabric. Come out to see us and watch bonnet making this afternoon! 👒
