May 3–May 9, 2026 is National Correctional Officers Week.

This week, we recognize and thank the dedicated men and women serving as Detention Deputies. Their work is essential to the safety and security of our community, yet it often goes unseen.

Every day, these professionals are responsible for booking and releasing inmates, conducting regular safety checks, providing meals, administering medications, coordinating laundry services, and addressing a wide range of inmate needs. Their commitment requires constant movement, attention, and professionalism.

Detention Deputies serve with vigilance, compassion, and integrity—while upholding the core values of justice, accountability, and public trust.

Please join us in showing appreciation for the hard work and dedication of our correctional staff.

Today, April 22, 2026, is Administrative Professionals Day, and we at the Red Willow Sheriff’s Office have two of the very best.

We are blessed to have Deb Korte and Misti Aguirre who are dedicated, hardworking, and keep our fast-paced office running smoothly every day. Their support is essential to everything we do, and we truly couldn’t do our jobs without there support.

We appreciate you both more than words can say—thank you, Deb and Misti!

Update from the Red Willow Sheriff’s Office

While we certainly miss Sheriff Kevin Darling’s knowledge and experience, it is reassuring to know he is only a phone call away if needed. In his absence, the team has stepped up and continues to perform above expectations.

With several individuals stepping into new roles over the past year, I am confident we have the right people in the right positions to continue improving and building upon the policies and procedures implemented recently to better serve the citizens of Red Willow County.

We have also made meaningful progress in several key areas:

• Increased patrol presence and community interaction, with deputies spending more time in our communities getting to know the jurisdiction and the citizens we serve. This includes engagement with local schools and businesses throughout the county.

• Enhanced training for new deputies. While academy graduates arrive with a solid foundation, true development begins in the field. Deputy Milton Blaine Varney implemented a Field Training Officer (FTO) program, with Deputies Joe Rothmeyer and Kobe Hyland as the first to complete the process. They have done an outstanding job and will serve as strong mentors for the new deputy entering the academy in August.

• Upgraded equipment and technology, including patrol unit laptops and the implementation of TRACS software, which have significantly improved efficiency and modernized operations. Jail Administrator Serge Yeboa and Lieutenant Mike Real have also worked to bring Red Willow Detention Center and the detention staff up to current jail standards. They successfully completed the first jail inspection since the Red Willow Sheriff’s Office became certified.

• Improving professional standards and reporting. Office Manager Deb Korte and Receptionist Misti Aguirre have been working diligently to enhance required reporting and public assistance processes that Kevin began improving over the past several years.

These are just a few examples of the progress made within the Sheriff’s Office over the past year. Please know we are always looking for ways to better serve the public and improve the efficiency of the Sheriff’s Office.

Thank you to our dedicated staff for their continued hard work and commitment to the community. We also extend our appreciation to the citizens of Red Willow County for their continued support. It is a privilege to serve such a strong and engaged community.

Good evening, Red Willow County—
For your awareness: there was a fire south of town near Highway 83. Thanks to the Red Willow Fire Department’s quick response, the fire was contained quickly.
However, a stack of hay bales caught fire, and crews are still working to fully extinguish it. As a result, the smell of smoke may linger for a few more hours. Unfortunately, the smoke is currently blowing directly into McCook.
Please remember we still have a high fire danger in the county and stay safe.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 10, 2026
Two-Vehicle Head-on Accident Under Investigation; One Arrest Made

On April 9, 2026, the Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle head-on accident between mile markers 108 and 109 on the Grand Army of the Republic Highway.

Deputy Milton Varney and Deputy Kobe Hyland arrived on scene and conducted an investigation. All individuals involved in the accident declined emergency medical services at the scene.

Following the investigation, deputies determined one of the drivers, Anna Trumble, showed signs of alcohol impairment. Anna Trumble was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Red Willow County Corrections Center.
She was booked on the following charges:
• Refusal of a chemical test (DUI)
• Possession/Consumption of an Open Alcohol Container
• Violation of Hand-Held Wireless Communication Device laws
• No Operator’s License in Possession

The Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office wants to take this opportunity to remind the Great citizens of Red Willow County to never drive under the influence and to always follow Nebraska traffic laws to ensure the safety of all motorists. A distracted driver under the influence of alcohol poses a serious danger to everyone on the road.

We would also like to thank the agencies that assisted with the scene. Bartley Fire and Rescue; Cambridge Fire Department and Cambridge EMS Rescue Services,

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Sheriff Darling here. As you know I periodically post scams so that the public isn’t taken advantage of.
I feel this latest scam is no different. There are people out there pushing the narrative and innuendo that one or more of my staff members has done something criminal in their past. Something everyone knows or should know is that if that were the case they wouldn’t be working for me. I’ve done thorough background investigations on all my employees, they have been completely vetted. The second part of that is that they are under a second vetting when they go to the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center. Any breach of their ethics discovered is grounds for disqualification.
No stone left unturned as it was.
I have complete faith in each and every one of my employees and you should have that confidence as well. Like many scams the exact source of this is difficult to determine. Someone has reason to cause the doubt. The position of Sheriff is the highest in law enforcement in the county, your ethics should reflect that.

Sheriff Darling here. It’s been a little busy. At this time the fire is being monitored very closely. I won’t give an all clear until I hear it from Fire Chief. What I do know that they, Red Willow Western Rural, Culbertson Fire, Beaver Valley Fire, McCook Fire and Rescue, and Indianola, Decatur County Kansas, as well as several locals with tractors and disks, battle the blaze at the front edge of the fire hot spots and appear to have beaten the main fire. Some of the area responders are breaking off and Western Rural are mopping up. Deputies Varney and Hyland along with Dept of Roads were stopping traffic and or piloting vehicles through the heavy smoke. No specific would on damage. One fire fighter was treated for heat exhaustion, but is still on scene.
