🇺🇸 Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedom. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

McCormick County Emergency Services would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all who gave everything in service to this nation. Because of their sacrifice, we are able to live, serve, and protect our communities each and every day.

As we spend time with family and friends this Memorial Day, let us never forget the true meaning behind the holiday.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” 🇺🇸

We remember. We honor. We are forever grateful.

On May 22nd at approximately 2300 hours, crews from Town of McCormick VFD, Plum Branch VFD, and Sandy Branch VFD were dispatched to the McCormick County School Complex in reference to a commercial fire alarm.

The first unit arriving on scene quickly confirmed a working fire and immediately requested additional resources. Local crews worked tirelessly throughout the night to contain and battle the fire while Incident Command and Emergency Management coordinated mutual aid resources from surrounding counties.

As the incident continued to escalate, a statewide request was made for additional firefighters and equipment from departments across South Carolina. The overwhelming response and support from neighboring agencies and departments across the state played a critical role in bringing this incident under control.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone involved throughout the night and into the following day for their hard work, professionalism, and dedication to keeping our community safe. Without the collective effort of all responding personnel, this incident could have had a much different outcome.

Thank you to all agencies, firefighters, emergency personnel, and support staff who answered the call.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family, friends, and the entire Greenwood Police Department during this incredibly difficult time. The sacrifice made in service to others will never be forgotten.

We stand beside our brothers and sisters in law enforcement as they mourn the loss of one of their own.

Smoke Advisory

McCormick County Emergency Services would like to advise the public that there are currently controlled burns taking place within portions of our county. These planned burns are being conducted by trained professionals as part of ongoing land and forest management efforts.

As a result, residents throughout the area may notice an increase in smoke and haze, especially during the morning and evening hours when smoke tends to settle closer to the ground. Depending on weather conditions and wind direction, smoke may travel into surrounding communities and reduce visibility in some locations.

Controlled burning is an important tool used to help reduce wildfire risk, remove excess vegetation, improve forest health, and maintain safer conditions throughout our area. While the smoke may be noticeable, these burns are planned, monitored, and conducted under strict safety guidelines.

Please use caution while driving in areas with reduced visibility due to smoke. Individuals with respiratory conditions, asthma, or other health concerns may also want to limit prolonged outdoor exposure while smoke remains in the area.

We appreciate the public’s understanding and patience as these operations are carried out to help keep our community and natural resources safe. We will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates if needed.
