MCDONALD โ Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) announced today the McDonald Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a $100,000 state grant to fund two key improvements: paving the departmentโs parking lot and installing an electronic sign for community and fire department announcements.
Ortitay worked closely with McDonald Fire Chief Philip Boggs to secure the funding, which will address a long-standing infrastructure need and give the department a new way to communicate with residents.
โMcDonaldโs volunteer firefighters give countless hours to keep our community safe, and they deserve facilities and tools that match their commitment,โ Ortitay said. โThis grant addresses a practical need with the parking lot while also giving the department a modern way to share important updates with residents.โ
The new parking lot surface will improve safety and accessibility for firefighters and visitors, while the electronic sign will allow the department to post real-time announcements, event notices and public safety messages visible to the surrounding community.
โWe cannot thank Rep. Ortitay enough,โ said McDonald Fire Chief Philip Boggs. โHis commitment to emergency services is truly second to none. Sections of our parking lot are in very poor condition. It has needed some attention for a long time. Our sign in the front of the building has served us well for almost 30 years, but it is a manual process to update and only serves a single message at a time. It is hard to allocate funds for improvements such as these with the cost of firefighting apparatus and personal protective equipment. These improvements will serve the volunteers of our great department, as well as the surrounding communities, for many, many years to come.โ
The 46th Legislative District includes South Fayette Township and McDonald and Oakdale boroughs in Allegheny County. It also encompasses Cecil, Chartiers, Mt. Pleasant and North Strabane (Districts 6,7,8 and 9) townships and Canonsburg, Houston and McDonald boroughs in Washington County.
