McFarland Animal Services needs your help reuniting two found animals with their families.

The first is a turtle that was found on March 23, 2026, on Bell Street. The turtle is safe and is currently being fostered.

The second is a dog that was found on March 24, 2026, near the 918 Davis Avenue area. We believe this pup has a home and are asking for the community’s help in sharing this post so we can reunite them with their family as soon as possible.

🐾 Meet Riley.
In December, McFarland Animal Services was notified by community members about a stray dog with a severely injured leg. Our Animal Services team responded promptly, located Riley, and transported her immediately so she could receive urgent veterinary care. Unfortunately, her injuries were so severe that amputation was necessary to save her life. Her surgery was a success, and Riley is expected to make a full recovery.
Riley has since been transferred to Roxy’s Ranch Haven, where she will continue healing in a safe and supportive rescue environment. Being placed with a rescue like this gives Riley the time, space, and individualized care she needs to recover physically, regain confidence, and adjust to life after her injury. This step is critical to her long-term well-being and her journey toward a loving home.
We are incredibly thankful to everyone who helped make Riley’s recovery possible. Thank you to our Animal Services team for their quick response and dedication, to the community members who spoke up and reported Riley’s condition, to Love Dogs Rescue for generously covering the full cost of her surgery, and to Laura Vega for coordinating Riley’s care and helping guide her recovery forward.

🐾 Meet Chance.
We want to take a moment to share the story of Chance and the effort it took to get him to safety.
Chance was abandoned and left to survive on his own for months. Without regular food, shelter, or medical care, he developed a severe case of mange, and his body began to break down. By the time our team was able to bring him into our care, he was in very poor condition, with painful lacerations and large areas of inflamed, exposed skin.

Over several weeks, concerned McFarland residents contacted Animal Services about a skinny, injured dog who clearly needed help. Our officers made multiple attempts to locate and safely catch him. It took patience, coordination, and persistence, but our team did not give up on Chance.

Once safely in our care, Chance was taken to the veterinarian, where he began treatment for mange and infection, received pain management, and was provided consistent food, clean water, and a safe place to rest. The photos shared show Chance during his recovery and transport. While he was still healing at the time, he already showed significant improvement and was expected to make a full recovery with continued care.

On Thursday, November 14, 2025, Chance was transferred to the Maison Sûre Foundation, where he continues receiving medical care, therapy, and close supervision. There, he has the time, resources, and support needed to fully heal, build confidence, and prepare for adoption into a loving home.

We want to recognize everyone who made this outcome possible:
• Our Animal Services team, who tracked Chance over time and ensured he received care
• The residents who continued calling and sharing information, helping us locate him
• Our transport partners and the Maison Sûre Foundation for carrying his recovery forward

Our Animal Services team is proud to share a very special update. 🐾
After spending more than two years in our shelter, Chris has been successfully placed with a rescue partner and is beginning a new chapter in his life. Now renamed Chip, he has been welcomed by Westside German Shepherd Rescue, where he will receive continued care, training, and new opportunities to thrive.
Rescue placements like this are an important part of our work. While shelters provide safety and care, rescue organizations can often offer more individualized attention, specialized resources, and expanded adoption networks. These partnerships help give dogs like Chip the best possible chance at a happy, permanent home.
This outcome reflects the dedication of our Animal Services staff, who work tirelessly to advocate for our animals, build rescue relationships, and ensure each dog is placed in an environment where they can succeed.
We are grateful to Westside German Shepherd Rescue for welcoming Chip and giving him this opportunity. ❤️
