With Prom approaching, the McFarland Police Department recognizes many students are excited to celebrate with friends after the dance. While post-prom gatherings can be a fun way to continue the night, we want to remind everyone of an important responsibility—especially for parents and guardians.
In Wisconsin, adults who knowingly allow underage drinking in their home or on their property can be held legally responsible. This includes situations where alcohol is provided, or even when it’s simply allowed to occur.

What does that mean:
• Allowing underage drinking in your home can result in citations or criminal charges
• You can also be held civilly liable if someone is injured or causes harm after leaving your property; even if you are not directly supplying the alcohol
Beyond the legal consequences, the risks associated with underage drinking—impaired driving, injuries, and poor decision-making—can have lasting impacts.

Ways to keep students safe:
• Host alcohol-free gatherings
• Communicate clear expectations before prom night
• Know where your child is and who they are with

Our goal is simple: We want everyone to enjoy prom night safely and make it home without incident.
If you have questions about local ordinances, please contact School Resource Officer Jacob Towns at the McFarland Police Department [email protected]

Let’s work together to keep our students and community safe.

Case #2026-190521 (OWI 4th)

On May 2, 2026, at approximately 1:10 a.m., an officer with the McFarland Police Department was on patrol in the area of Siggelkow Road and Erling Avenue when a large gray truck was observed traveling eastbound. The vehicle abruptly turned into the driveway of an apartment complex’s underground parking area, behavior that appeared consistent with an attempt to avoid a marked squad car.
During the interaction, the officer observed multiple signs of impairment. The driver declined to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and was subsequently placed under arrest for Operating While Intoxicated 4th offense.
The driver was booked into the Dane County Jail, and the case will be forwarded to the Dane County District Attorney’s Office for review.
