Historical Mcgill Nevada - Smelter

Historical Mcgill Nevada - Smelter Smelter later named McGill Nevada was a company town. Built by the mine to house its employees. It at one time had a population of 4000.

The community was very diverse as people come from countries all over the world to work at the mine. I created this page as a way to preserve the rich history of the town I grew up in. McGill Nevada would become a large mining community, after the discovery of Copper in White Pine County. It's history as a company town is a reminder of yesteryears. McGill residents would become steeped in a rich c

ulture of emigrants. The town would be segregated into ethnic groups such as Greek town, Reep town, Ni**er town, ect. McGill at one time had five bars on its main street. Each bar also frequented by different ethnic groups. The story of McGill much like the story of the United States reminds of where we all come from.

Since you all liked the picture of Ely, here is one of our McGill Grade School Tigers taken I believe in 1955. He was a new teacher that married Dick Munson’s sister and taught math to me as well as coaching and played on the men’s basketball team. Our gym was about 3 or 4 years old by that time. See if you can remember the kids Don and I grew up with. We were 7th graders at this point. Enjoy a bit of perhaps your past!

Thanks Ton Tate.

Mark Beason asked:
:Do you have any pictures of the employees of the mill? My grandfather retired from there in 77 after working 45 years. His name was Mike Cvitkovich."
Can anyone help him with pictures?

I get photos from many different sources. I want to give credit for some of them.
