McKeesport teen Michael Armstrong III attended the May City Council Meeting to accept a proclamation from Mayor Maglicco and Fire Chief Kovach.

Armstrong and Amere Turner, who could not attend the meeting, were recognized for their heroic efforts during a structure fire at 1600 Sumac Street in the City’s Seventh Ward, on April 15.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a fully involved blaze with flames extending from the apartment building’s top floor and heavy, brown smoke billowing into the street and impacting visibility on scene. Armstrong and Turner had noticed the fire and alerted occupants by banging loudly on windows when they could not gain access to the building.

These young men displayed the “courage and loyalty” mentioned in the firefighters’ credo in their effort to wake a sleeping resident and aid in her escape from the burning apartment building before first-responders arrived. The proclamation recognizes their bravery, compassion, and willingness to help others in a dangerous, life-threatening situation.
