Please remember that burning is still restricted within town limits until May 15 until after 4 pm and certain open air burnings within town limits require a permit at all times.

The Countywide burn ban has officially been lifted.

If you notice smoke in the area today, don’t panic. Fort Pickett is conducting a controlled burn and smoke has been seen drifting into the McKenney and DeWitt area.

Important reminder: we are still under a burn ban and smoke should never be ignored. Think of today as “don’t be alarmed, but do stay aware.”.

If you see smoke and it seems unusual, close by, or not consistent with this notification, trust your instincts and report it. We’d much rather check on a possible fire than assume.

Dinwiddie has a county-wide burn ban, in addition to the state burn ban, that prohibits open-air burning. We have been asked “what is open-air burning”. Open-air burning, means any outdoor fire that is not covered and/or contained within non-flammable barriers and the smoke from the fire does not pass through a chimney. We’ve added some pictures with common examples.

Please also use caution with cigarette butts, machinery, or anything that could potentially start a fire. Let’s keep Dinwiddie safe and if you know a rain dance, add that to your weekend plans!
