May 24th, 2026 afternoon crews responded to a recreational accident in a forested area after a rider reportedly overshot a jump and sustained serious lower extremity injuries. Firefighters, EMS personnel, and bystanders worked together to package and transport the patient using a “Big Wheel” litter to reach the roadway, where the patient was transferred to an ambulance for further care.

We appreciate the teamwork from everyone involved in assisting with this difficult rescue.

🚨 A Piece of Arcata Fire History Returns Home 🚨

In the early 1980s, an air raid siren was installed at the Arcata Fire Station to alert volunteer firefighters to emergencies throughout the community. For years, the sound of that siren served as a call to action — a reminder of the dedication and service of those who answered when duty called.

When the Arcata station underwent remodeling in 2014, the siren found a new purpose. It was donated to the Kinetic Lab, where it continued its tradition of signaling excitement and community spirit as the starting siren for the Kinetic Race each Memorial Day weekend.

Years later, after the Kinetic Lab acquired a new siren, Gregg Foster became the caretaker of this historic piece of equipment. Thanks to the efforts and collaboration between Gregg and Arcata Fire staff, the siren has now officially made its way back home to Arcata Fire.

We are proud to preserve this small but meaningful part of our department’s history and the generations of service it represents. ❤️🚒

Arcata Fire District is proud to celebrate Engineer Ashley Foster, who was invited to participate in the Soroptimist of Eureka and Arcata’s “Dream It, Be It” event — an inspiring day dedicated to empowering young women through career exploration, mentorship, and goal setting.

Ashley joined an incredible panel of women leaders who shared their personal journeys, challenges, and encouragement for the next generation. Her participation reflects the importance of representation, perseverance, and service within our community.

The messages shared throughout the day were powerful:
💜 Be true to yourself.
💜 Follow your dreams.
💜 Never give up when things get hard.

We are honored to see one of our own helping inspire future leaders and showing young women that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.

Thank you to Soroptimist of Eureka and Arcata for creating such a meaningful and impactful event for our community.

Arcata Fire District was proud to participate in today’s large-scale disaster drill alongside fellow first responders and PG&E crews, simulating the aftermath of a major earthquake.

Exercises like these are critical in helping agencies strengthen coordination, communication, and emergency response efforts before a real disaster happens. We appreciate the opportunity to train together and continue building preparedness for our community.

Thank you to Redwood News Reporter Christina Mehr for covering today’s event and highlighting the importance of disaster readiness and interagency collaboration. 🚒⚡🌎

Wildfire Preparedness Week (May 3–9) is your reminder: the time to get ready is now—before fire season intensifies.

CAL FIRE Humboldt–Del Norte Unit urges residents and visitors to take a few simple but powerful steps to reduce wildfire risk: clear defensible space, harden your home, and create a family emergency plan. These actions don’t take long, but they can make a life-saving difference.

Start today. Talk with your family. Help a neighbor. When we all do our part, we build stronger, safer, and more fire-resilient communities across the North Coast.

In Humboldt County, wildfire risk is real—especially with our dense forests and dry summer conditions. Creating defensible space around your home is one of the most effective ways to protect your property and support firefighters.

Know Your Zones:

Zone 0 (0–5 feet):
Keep it lean, clean, and green
• Remove leaves, pine needles, and anything flammable
• Use gravel, concrete, or other non-combustible materials

Zone 1 (5–30 feet):
Create space and reduce fuels
• Trim trees and shrubs away from structures
• Keep grass short and maintained

Zone 2 (30–100 feet):
Reduce wildfire spread
• Remove dead vegetation and fallen branches
• Space trees and reduce dense brush

✅ Start from your home and work outward
✅ Maintain your space throughout the season

Together, we can help keep our communities safer this fire season.
