We are hiring an intern, and this is not a coffee-run role.

From day one you're a contributing member of the team, working on real projects tied to your interests and career goals. The internship wraps with a final project you'll present, something that contributes to both McKinney and your own growth.

If you land with MEDC, you could work across:

Research, data analysis, and program development
Business retention, recruitment, and workforce development
Marketing and events
Cross-team support on the priorities driving McKinney's growth

Who we're looking for:

Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program
Strong research, writing, and analytical skills
Comfortable in Excel and data tools
Self-motivated and able to juggle multiple tasks
Genuinely curious about economic development, local government, or workforce

We're proud to welcome Aaron Werner as the new Senior Vice President of the McKinney Economic Development Corporation.

If you know McKinney, you know Aaron. For more than four years he led Visit McKinney, building a sports tourism engine that brought events like the NCAA Division II Football National Championship, the Billie Jean King Cup, and the PPA Tour's Texas Open to our city. He earned McKinney the Tourism Friendly Texas designation, reimagined the Visitors Center, and holds the CDME, the tourism industry's highest individual credential.

The truth is, tourism and economic development are two sides of the same coin. The visitor who falls in love with our historic downtown today can become tomorrow's resident, entrepreneur, or employer. Aaron has spent his career telling the McKinney story, and now he gets to drive it forward on an even bigger stage.

28 hours. 100 miles. 16,000 feet of climbing. And Cole Cannon is a Leadville finisher. 🏔️💪

Cole, the owner and developer of the Cannon Beach Adventure Park in McKinney, just completed the legendary Life Time Leadville Trail 100 RUN, one of the most demanding endurance races in the world.

For 28 hours, he lived somewhere between “I can’t” and “I did.”

And he didn’t do it alone. Huge props to the team who made the trip to Leadville and helped him get through the toughest moments: Shannon Cannon, Boone, Darren Porter, and T.S. Sanford.

100 miles.
16,000 feet of elevation gain.
28 hours of growth.

A new chapter for Hugs Café is taking shape in McKinney. 💙

Hugs Café has officially opened its new $10 million national headquarters, bringing its café, hospitality training program and staff together under one roof.
The 13,500-square-foot facility doubles the organization’s training capacity, creating more opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to build skills, gain meaningful employment and thrive in the workforce.

The new headquarters is a powerful example of what can happen when a community invests in opportunity and inclusion. MEDC is proud to see McKinney continue to support organizations like Hugs Café that create meaningful economic and community impact.

What if the next big innovation in North Texas didn’t just get funded, but actually got deployed?

That’s the idea behind North Texas Connected, a regional innovation pitch competition bringing startups together with real municipal challenges from Frisco and McKinney.

This year, startups can pitch solutions in three key areas:

🏗️ Smart infrastructure & predictive maintenance
🚛 Fleet, asset & route intelligence
🌱 Environmental monitoring, conservation & waste optimization

The winning solutions have the opportunity to move toward real city pilots, with the early-stage winner receiving an MEDC pilot and the growth-stage winner receiving an FEDC pilot.

Applications are open to startups around the world through August 31.

Last week, two of our team members completed the Basic Economic Development Course offered by TEDC in Southlake, Texas. Managing Director of Innovation Troy Billett and Erick Rodriguez, our Business Intelligence Analyst, walked away with practical tools and comprehensive knowledge and wealth of practical tools in Economic Development.

It was a great week of learning, plus galvanizing key relationships formed with EDO's from across the state.

🚀 McKinney is doubling down on innovation.

We're proud to launch North Texas Connected alongside the Frisco Economic Development Corporation and the North Texas Innovation Alliance, a new regional pitch competition inviting startups across North America to help solve real challenges facing our cities.

This year's focus areas:
🛠️ Public Infrastructure & Emergency Response
🚚 Transportation, Fleet & Route Optimization
🌱 Environmental Solutions

Selected companies won't just pitch. They'll walk away with city pilot opportunities, office space, NTXIA membership, and direct introductions to executives at public agencies, Fortune 500 companies, universities, and investors.

Applications open August 4 and close August 31. Finalists are announced the week of September 15, with final pitch events happening right here in McKinney and in Frisco on October 21.

As Jennifer Sanders, Executive Director of NTXIA, put it: North Texas is a place where great ideas don't just get discussed, they get deployed.
