MVFD is growing our team of EMTs, all to expand our care for the community, and we want to extend our sincerest congratulations to our newest members who passed the National Registry EMT certification! Well done, Finn Gundersen, James Hamrick, Evelina Hobson and Carter Mauro. To reach this level of emergency medical service certification requires about 400 hours of classroom work, hands-on practice, riding time and study. Pictured, at the station, are Evelina Hobson and MVFD President Patricia Moynihan. And our four new EMTs in the graduating class from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Academy’s EMT Class #071: Carter Mauro, back row, third from the left; Finn Gundersen, back row, fourth from the left; James Hamrick, back row, third from the right; Evelina Hobson, middle row, third from the left; and instructor Laura Calkins (also an MVFD volunteer), front row, first from the right. And thanks to Lynn Clancy, MVFD’s outgoing EMS Captain.

A wonderful evening as American Legion Post 270 in McLean welcomed MVFD President Patricia Moynihan to discuss the 104-year history of our department and to offer an update on the current state of our work. Our thanks to Len Wales, the Post 270 Commander. And another big thanks to Gene Beach, a member of the American Legion -- and a lifetime member of MVFD and longtime Fairfax County firefighter. Gene joined the discussion to help answer important questions about hydrants, water pressure and issues relating to the heartbreaking LA fires.

MVFD ended 2024 with record-setting numbers of emergency responses, duty shifts and hours volunteered, all in service to our community.

The career and volunteer personnel responded to 7,060 calls last year with our fire engine, tower-ladder, ambulance and medic units, and our utility vehicle. Of those, the volunteers carried out 690 calls aboard our emergency medical units.

Overall, our volunteers staffed 280 shifts, putting in 8,720 hours of operational duty.

In addition, our volunteers logged another 3,753 hours of training, to make sure our life-saving skills remain at the highest level possible.

And, more: Our volunteers logged 5,131 hours for administrative and support efforts to our fire, rescue, emergency medical response, public education and community outreach missions.

The total effort that volunteers devoted to service for MVFD, and for you, was 17,606 hours.

We thank all of our career and volunteer personnel, and are proud to serve a caring and involved community. We appreciate your many words of thanks and your financial support.

In fact, the fire engine, all three medic units, and our utility were purchased with donations from the community. Thank you.

Happy 2025. Stay safe!

Our career personnel enjoyed another delicious meal sponsored by a local restaurant. Thanks to Listrani’s, which provided chicken parmesan, pasta, focaccia bread, salad, drinks, and cannoli. And thanks to volunteer Lori Davis for organizing it all!
It is inspiring how strongly people in our community support one another. So many help our firehouse, and you can, too, by making a tax-deductible donation for a new volunteer-staffed fire engine to help expand our ability to respond to emergencies in McLean. MVFD was honored to join the McLean Citizens Association on Wednesday to instruct Hands-Only/Bystander CPR. MVFD President Patricia Moynihan, EMS Captain Lynn Clancy, and Volunteers Clara Reiss and Lily Brumbaugh taught the easily-accessible, life-saving skills to a terrific group of MCA members. If your organization wants MVFD to visit and instruct, please email [email protected] and we will be there for you.

Our sincerest thanks to everyone at Koons Tysons Toyota for their generous donation of $15,000 to help MVFD purchase a new fire engine to better serve our community – and they were kind enough to stop by the station to deliver the check! (L-R) MVFD President Patricia Moynihan; Amar Rana, the General Manager of Koons Tysons Toyota; Jen Han, the Koons Finance Director; MVFD Treasurer Bob Flores; and Krystle Uriona, the Koons Customer Relations Manager. MVFD is fortunate to belong to, and to serve, a generous and supportive community, and we continue to rely on your donations to do our volunteer job and to support the career firefighters and EMS personnel. Santa tries to cover as much of the McLean area as he can, but he simply can’t visit every street. Many cul-de-sacs and dead-end streets are particularly difficult for the Pirsch sleigh, too. So, if you know he is in your neighborhood – and we will try to make a lot of noise — or if you’re tracking via the Santa tracker – hurry out to the major streets and intersections as fast as you can to see Santa. The schedule also may change owing to weather or mechanical issues.

A great day with VFW’s McLean Post 8241 for the Army-Navy football game! Everyone enjoyed the honor guard presentation, the National Anthem sung by a local elementary school, and of course a tasty BBQ lunch. We shared information about our mission, and sold our Christmas ornaments of Santa riding the antique Pirsch fire engine. It's also always great to spend time with Dranesville District - Supervisor Jimmy Bierman. Thanks to MVFD Secretary Ben Ewell for all of his work.

MVFD was pleased to deliver a holiday meal to our friends and colleagues at Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Apparatus Shop North and at the Fairfax County Department of Vehicle Services, where the incredibly professional crew members keep all of our fire, rescue and emergency medical vehicles running so we can work to keep our community safe. Thanks to EMS Captain Lynn Clancy for organizing the food delivery.
