August 11 is 811 Day, and it's the perfect way to remember that any digging project, even a small one like planting flowers or setting a fence post, starts with contacting 811. It's free, it's fast, and it's the only way to know what's buried beneath your yard before you break ground.
Skipping it isn't a shortcut — it's a gamble with gas lines, water mains and more. Contact 811 first, dig second.

Hot, dry weather means there is a higher chance of red flag warnings in our area. These conditions — warm temps, low humidity, and strong winds — can increase fire risk.
To help keep McMinnville safe during hot, dry conditions, McMinnville Water & Light activates Enhanced Sensitivity Mode on power equipment in higher‑risk zones (see map). This makes our high‑voltage switches and relays more responsive to potential faults.

What this means for you:

➡️Outages may take longer to resolve, and customers in the designated Enhanced Sensitivity areas may experience unexpected shutoffs as part of these safety measures.
➡️Your safety is our priority — thank you for your patience as we work to reduce fire risk in our community.

How long does it take to replace a power pole?
When a pole is damaged, our crews work as quickly and safely as possible to restore power. A pole replacement takes 4–8 hours and can take longer depending on the location, weather, and complexity of the equipment attached.
Here’s what happens during the process:
🔴Crews secure the area and remove the damaged pole
🔴A new pole is delivered, placed, and set
🔴 Lines and equipment are transferred and tested
🟢Power is restored once everything is safe and ready
After a damaging storm, dozens or even hundreds of poles can be broken, so it can take days or weeks to restore power in the aftermath. This is why we encourage everyone to have an emergency plan and be prepared.
If you ever see a damaged pole, stay back and report it right away. Also, do not approach line workers on the job as the scene may not be safe, and it will delay the restoration process.

FYI, you might notice MW&L crews installing these new devices on power lines around McMinnville. These are fault indicators, and here's what these smart devices do:
✅Monitor the grid: They constantly track the electrical current flowing through power lines.
✅Spot sudden trouble: They instantly sense abnormal electrical surges caused by things like falling tree branches.
✅Signal our teams: When a fault happens, they trigger a flashing LED light.
✅Isolate outages: Finding damaged equipment faster helps us secure potential hazards quickly, possibly reducing the duration of the outage.
Here's what these devices don't do:
❌They are not cameras, so they do not take photos or record video or audio.
❌They do not prevent outages but can help us assess the outage more quickly.
➡️Is there anything customers need to do? No. If you see an indicator flashing, you do not need to call. And as always, do not attempt to touch or tamper with the device, power lines, poles or any other MW&L equipment.
If you have any questions, let us know.
