Professor of Music & Director of Instrumental Activities, Joan Haaland Paddock at Linfield College has four study tips for students as finals week kicks off.

1. CONSIDER: In addition to memorizing important facts, consider the larger picture of the who, what, when, where, why, and how to more deeply understand the material.

2. BREATHE – breathe deeply. Try to do square breathing at a slow tempo. Breathe in for four counts slowly. Let the breath suspend for four counts and then exhale and release that breath in four counts. WAIT for four counts. Repeat this for about 4 minutes. Relax (don’t stand up quickly) and you will be amazed at how this cleanses and re-energizes your mind.

3. WALK – or pace – while you are reading your note cards or flash cards that you have made for yourself. If you have a way for materials to be read for you by your digital device (phone) do it. Listen. Walk. Pause the audio and repeat back what was said (while continuing to walk); repeat!

4. IMAGINE. Imagine the space and time – exactly where you will be when the test begins. Imagine the questions and imagine your breathing and confidently answering questions because of your desire and practice to understand and communicate the material and why it Matters to you. Imagine every question that might occur on the test and imagine every coherent and informed answer that you will type or write down. Imagine from beginning to end. This is focus on what will be – and then you will have already been there when the time comes for your exam.

Good luck! Dr. Joan

from Michael Backus the evening coordinator at Nicholson Library
Tips:
1. Read out loud your notes as you rewrite them.
2. Read out loud your notes as you create note cards from them.
3. Sing your notes or note cards to your favorite song. I like Wild Thing!
4. Drink LOTS of water. Bathroom breaks are good breaks and water improves cognition.
