Part of living up to the high standards in our profession is constant, ongoing, high-quality training, which is what we strive for in the Cadet Unit. Last week, that included unknown risk traffic stops where the Cadets encountered a variety of scenarios designed to make them think on their feet, make lawful decisions and do everything with officer safety in mind.

The Cadets have been making the most of their summer break by going on lots of ride alongs! Just this week, Cadets Alfaro and Strange rode with a patrol deputy and assisted with numerous traffic stops, helped out with traffic control at a crash, performed area checks and made some warrant service attempts. At their last meeting, the Cadets refreshed on basic handcuffing and person search skills and then finished up with some field investigation scenarios. Weekly meetings are just one of the ways we have one of the most successful Cadet programs around; it encourages accountability, keeps skills fresh and demands a high level of participation, which in turn develops our young people into great candidates for future careers in law enforcement.

Congratulations are in order for former Cadet Captain Avital Shekhtman who was just hired as a Support Services Specialist with the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office! Avital will be working the front desk, filling records requests, performing data-entry, answering phone calls and continuing to serve the public.

Avital volunteered in our Cadet Unit for many years and was eventually promoted to Captain because of her diligence, positive attitude and excellent work ethic. We're very excited for her as she takes on a new position with the SO. Congrats Avital!

And that’s a wrap!

After 16 hour days in the hot sun, the Cadets successfully pulled off another year of superior parking control at the 2026 Yamhill County Fair and Rodeo! Shout out to Cadet Captain Orlando Torres who coordinated all the Cadets at the event this year and personally put in over 65 hours in just 4 days. And thanks to all the Cadets who volunteered their time this year to make sure everything went smoothly.
