🚔 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐎𝐮𝐭: 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐀𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐲! 🚔

It was a much nicer night to celebrate neighborhoods, share information, and provide resources to the citizens of Amity last night at their rescheduled National Night Out event.

And while not everyone could've possibly had as much fun as Deputy Vandewettering, we enjoyed getting to hang out with our friends from City of Amity, Oregon and Amity Fire District, along with our volunteers and 𝙮𝙤𝙪!

Catch us celebrating with the community of Willamina at their rescheduled NNO event on Tuesday, August 18th. Yamhill Communications Agency (YCOM) will be there with the 9-1-1 Call Simulator, as well as volunteers from many of our volunteer programs and community partners and sponsors from around the area.

The Oregon International Air Show flies in to town this week! Help do your part by making sure that your pets are prepared for the upcoming event.

𝙋𝙚𝙩 𝙎𝙖𝙛𝙚𝙩𝙮
🐾 The loud airplane noises can frighten animals, so keep them indoors in a quiet, secure area.
🆔 Ensure they wear ID tags in case they escape. Also, double-check that their microchip info is current—this can be a lifesaver if they get scared and run.
🦌🐈 Feral cats and wildlife may seek refuge in quiet spaces; please give them space.
🚫Due to the flight paths and how the sound carries, more than the area near the airport may be impacted. Never leave your pets outside or unattended, even in a fenced yard.
✅ If your pet has extreme anxiety, ask your vet ahead of time about calming options, whether it’s medication, natural supplements, and ear muffs.
🔊 Turn on calming music, white noise, or the TV to help mask the sound of aircraft.

Hard to believe it’s already been a week since our K9 teams took to the arena for their inaugural demonstration at the Yamhill County Fair & Rodeo! We’re flashing back to two memorable days of teamwork, training, and determination from K9s Koa, Valk, and Delta and their handlers. 🐕‍🦺

For those who missed the shows, this video gives you a look at the suspect apprehension portion of the demo from each K9 team.

A huge thank-you to everyone who came out, our hardworking decoys Allen and Paul, and Northwest Naturals Raw Pet Food for making sure the ladies got some well-earned post-show treats! 🦴🐾

On August 3, 2026, Justice Allen Cochran, 25, of Salem, appeared in Yamhill County Circuit Court and was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in the Oregon Department of Corrections for shooting at law enforcement officers during a high-speed pursuit on November 4, 2025.

The incident began in rural Yamhill County, where Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office investigators were involved in an unrelated investigation south of Amity. During that response, law enforcement encountered Cochran, who fled in a vehicle, initiating a pursuit that continued to Highway 18 between Highway 99W and Three Mile Lane in McMinnville. The pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle went off the roadway and the driver and passenger briefly fled on foot before being apprehended.

During the pursuit, Cochran intentionally rammed a Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office vehicle before firing several rounds at YCSO Detective Sergeant Will Lavish and Detective Skip Jones and Oregon State Police Sergeant Justin Zemlicka.

Investigators determined that Cochran fired four rounds toward Sergeant Zemlicka's patrol vehicle. The investigation further revealed bullet strikes to DSgt. Lavish's vehicle, including the driver's side mirror and driver's door, as well as a bullet strike through Det. Jones' vehicle windshield. A bullet was recovered from the shoulder area of the front passenger seat of Jones' vehicle. Investigators also recovered a semi-automatic handgun and spent shell casings from Cochran's vehicle.

Thankfully, none of the officers were struck or physically injured during the exchange.

As part of a negotiated resolution with Yamhill County District Attorney’s Office, Cochran pleaded guilty to three counts of Attempted Aggravated Murder with a Firearm, a Measure 11 offense. Additional charges of Reckless Endangerment, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer were dismissed.

The court imposed the statutory maximum sentence of 240 months on each count, as well as a 60-month sentence pursuant to ORS 161.610 on the first count, ordering portions of the sentences to run consecutively. Cochran will receive credit for time served and remains subject to any sentence reductions authorized by law but will serve no less than 30 years in DOC custody.

"This sentence reflects the extreme danger this defendant posed not only to our deputies and our law enforcement partners, but to everyone traveling on our roadways that day. Our detectives and the Oregon State Police trooper involved demonstrated tremendous courage, professionalism, and restraint while facing deadly force. I am incredibly grateful that they all went home safely to their families.

Cases like this are a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers willingly face every day to protect our communities, and I want to thank everyone involved, specifically the Oregon State Police Major Crimes detectives, Newberg-Dundee Police Department for digital evidence processing, and Yamhill County District Attorney's Office's District Attorney Lynch, Chief Deputy District Attorney Vogel, and Deputy District Attorney Doerge for bringing this case to a successful conclusion." - Sheriff Sam Elliott

✋ 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 ✋

According to NHTSA, speeding-related fatalities affect communities nationwide every year. In 2024, there were 11,288 speed-related traffic fatalities, accounting for 29% of all traffic fatalities. Young drivers have a higher chance of being involved in speeding-related crashes. In 2024, 39% of male drivers and 20% of female drivers in the 15- to 20-year-old age group involved in fatal traffic crashes were speeding.

In July, using funds provided by NHTSA and Oregon Department of Transportation to provide focused high visibility enforcement, Yamhill County conducted eight focused periods, which resulted in:

🛑 40 total stops
📝 14 citations
⚠️ 22 warnings

These stops also resulted in 1 arrest for PCS-meth and a warrant.

YCSO reminds drivers that speeding is an aggressive and deadly behavior. It reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around another vehicle, a hazardous object, or an unexpected curve. The consequences of speeding can lead to a costly ticket, potential jail time, or worse, a crash resulting in injuries or death.
