Regarding the mailers about PA Senate Candidate, Al Buchtan, supposedly increasing taxes during his time on the Carmichaels School District School Board…
Almost immediately after the first mailer appeared stating “Liberal Al Buchtan…” raised taxes through the roof as a member of the Carmichaels School District Board, something unprecedented happened – their Board members and administration had to publicly state, apolitically, that none of this was true.
These mailers have been fueled by an assumption that the meeting minutes stated that an LST Tax had gone from $5 to $10. They hadn’t. The $10 had always been split between the borough and school, $5 each.
Outside of the school board and admin explaining this in interviews and in news articles, they clarified on their site and made sure to update the meeting minutes to put an end to the misunderstanding:

But instead of discussing a $5 dollar annual increase in taxes that never happened, we are more interested in discussing (as a Party) the ~$5 MILLION dollar reduction in their budget during Mr. Buchtan's tenure on the School Board.
**See the attached letter from the Superintendent of Carmichaels School District.**
Our Committee is very passionate about the activities of our School Board, and School Boards in general. These Boards are as close to guiding the next generation as you can get. Additionally, public schools are usually your largest tax burden and therefore the tax dollars must be justified.
In short, two things traditional Republican ideologies are supposed to protect at all costs are ensuring the next generation is better off than the previous one and protecting the hard earned money of the taxpayer. Hence the significance of who gets elected to School Boards and what they actually do.
It is rare in the world of politics that there is literally explicit and specific information that not only is something untrue, but that the opposite of it is in fact true. The meeting minutes, votes taken, and meeting videos all reflect the overall budget decrease and no tax increase. So when the opposite it is still promulgated, we are not ok with that, especially in the domain of School Districts and the actions of School Board members.
Why?
Because it is rare and difficult for even Republicans to be brave on School Boards when it comes to fiscal conservatism. In other words, when it does happen, and happens without having to cut staff or necessary educational resources, our Party should be celebrating this and learning from it, not distorting it.
Generally speaking, our Committee does not do “politics as a sport”. We don't do this for a living. It’s not a cage match to most of us. Especially in Republican primaries where the goal is to nominate the BEST candidate to go against the Democratic Party in the Fall – not “win by any means necessary” to the extent that we are literally providing ammo to our opponents against our nominated candidate for the Fall.
And this is not just hot air from us.
The leadership and newly elected/appointed members have proven this over the last few years when we felt compelled to primary fellow Republican candidates for School Board and Council.
We did this by educating, endorsing (when applicable), and then promoting and advertising the strength of our recommended candidates.
All went on to be victorious in the Republican primaries, and ultimately in the general election against the Democratic Candidates. As a Committee, we DID NOT attack our fellow Republican opponents in the Primaries whether they were challengers or incumbents.
We did not do this because life does indeed go on after elections, and while “going negative” and using “fear” is a hell of a drug to coerce voting in a certain direction, it also likely leads to a few unintended (or intended) consequences.
For example:
- Causing people to leave the Party.
- Convincing good and qualified people that running for elected positions is a bad idea.
- Decreasing voter turnout due to disgust/confusion/apathy.
- Feeding ammo to their General election opponents.
- General dehumanization of people who have successful careers, spouses, and kids.
None of this advances our ideals and philosophies.
This is not an endorsement of a candidate. It's an endorsement of our ideals.
