Well, C Shift… we see your Mustaches & Muscles, and we raise you Mullets & Mayhem. 😎

After C Shift set the standard with upgraded facial hair and a suspiciously sudden increase in muscle mass, B Shift knew they couldn’t just stand in front of the truck and take a normal picture.

That would be far too reasonable.

The mustaches stayed.
The muscles got bigger.
But B Shift brought one thing C Shift somehow overlooked:

The mullet.

Business in the front.
Firefighting in the back. 🔥

And judging by this photo, apparently absolutely no restraint anywhere in between.

So now the competition is officially on:

C Shift: Mustaches & Muscles.
B Shift: Mullets & Mayhem.
A Shift: You’re up. 👀

We are officially issuing the McPherson Fire Department Shift Photo Challenge.

A Shift, the bar has been set — although we’re becoming increasingly concerned about where this ends.

A Couple of Reminders That It’s Getting Dry Out There…

The McPherson Fire Department responded to two separate incidents along highways near McPherson today that served as a good reminder of just how dry the grass in our area is becoming.

Shortly before 2:00 p.m., crews responded to a vehicle fire on K-61. The fire began in the engine compartment of a vehicle that had experienced mechanical problems and pulled onto the shoulder. The fire quickly spread from the vehicle into the grass alongside the roadway.

As crews were finishing up at that scene, we were dispatched along with the Moundridge Fire Department to a grass fire south of mile marker 54 on I-135. Construction crews performing highway repair work were cutting concrete when sparks from the operation ignited nearby grass.

Neither incident was the result of anyone being careless. They were simply two everyday situations that became grass fires because the conditions were right.

Until temperatures cool down and we receive some meaningful moisture, vegetation throughout our area will continue to become increasingly receptive to fire. Please use a little extra caution with any outdoor activity that can produce sparks, heat, or embers—including welding, grinding, cutting, mowing, dragging chains, and disposing of smoking materials.

As the drought map shows, much of central and western Kansas is already experiencing abnormally dry to drought conditions. It doesn’t take much of a spark when Mother Nature has already supplied the kindling.

Structure Fire at McPherson Walmart

At 7:13 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, the McPherson Fire Department was dispatched to the McPherson Walmart, 205 S. Centennial Drive, for the report of a structure fire. Initial reports indicated a fire in an office located within the stock area at the rear of the store.

The McPherson Police Department, McPherson County Sheriff’s Office, and McPherson EMS also responded.

Upon arrival, fire crews entered the building through the rear of the store and located an office with minor fire damage. One fire sprinkler head had activated and was flowing water. The sprinkler system successfully extinguished the fire prior to the arrival of fire crews.

Firefighters confirmed the fire was fully extinguished and placed wedges in the activated sprinkler head to stop the flow of water. Fire damage was limited to the immediate area of the office, with water present on the floor throughout portions of the rear stock area.

The McPherson Fire Department responded with one ladder truck, one engine, two command vehicles, and nine personnel.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. At this time, no foul play is suspected.

Several members of our department and our salesman traveled to Appleton, Wisconsin, this week for a few days to attend the pre-build meeting for the fire engine we ordered in October 2024.

If all goes according to plan, we hope to take delivery in the first quarter of 2027—which, in fire truck years, is apparently considered “right around the corner.”

The new engine will replace our 2003 Engine at Station 1. The 2003 will then move into reserve status for a few more years because, much like some of our firefighters, retirement keeps getting pushed back.

While we were there, we also had an opportunity to get a look at the future of fire apparatus. There are some impressive things coming.

We also discovered that thanks to inflation, our apparatus budget does not go nearly as far as it used to.

As you can see from the photo, we adjusted our expectations accordingly.

Good news: delivery times on this model appear to be much better.

Several members of our department got the opportunity to attend the Global Leadership Summit being presented as a remote site at the McPherson Community Building. Pictures don't lie, it is a bonding experience for our firefighters.

When an automatic crash detection call is received via 911 with no response on the other end, law enforcement, fire, and, EMS all get to go for an early morning drive.

****UPDATE****

After a seemingly exciting evening at an establishment, a wildly unsuccessful trip through McPherson County, and a mediocre game of hide and seek, this driver was apprehended at about 8 a.m.

After the drivers truck decided it wanted to lay down and take a nap, his phone gave us a call, we responded and didn't immediately find him. A safe, sober and alert driver, navigating a successful trip through McPherson County alerted us to the drivers location.

The driver was questioned, the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending. Thank you to everyone who provided additional information on this incident.

On Friday, August 7, 2026 at about 3 a.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a roll over crash on Interstate 135.

Upon arrival, deputies learned the driver may enjoy going for long early morning runs cross country .... because they failed to wait to speak with us.
