RE: Active Shooter Incident - May 24, 2026

In the early afternoon hours of May 24th, deputies were dispatched to a call in reference to threats made to the complainant by another citizen. After speaking with the complainant, deputies then attempted to make contact with the alleged offender located on Studstill Road off of Temperance Road. As the deputies arrived on the property, they were immediately met with gunfire. Both deputies were able to make an immediate retreat from the area to a safe location while sending out an urgent call for help. Law enforcement personnel from several surrounding agencies/counties immediately responded. Due to the nature of the call and impending threats, a perimeter was quickly set up in an effort to contain the shooter. Georgia State Patrol SWAT and Georgia Bureau of Investigation were called for assistance and ultimately took control of the incident. After a period of telephone negotiations with the shooter to turn himself in which proved to be unsuccessful, the decision was made to enter the residence of the shooter. Upon entering the residence, the offender was found to be with a self-inflicted gunshot wound which eventually resulted in his loss of life.

I want to first thank God for protecting my deputies and other first responders throughout this dangerous and tense situation. This incident could have had a far worse outcome. I pray diligently for my staff day in and day out, and our Lord hears those prayers. I also want to thank all the agencies who responded to our call for help. There are simply too many to name in this post. I want to thank our 911 dispatchers for being our lifeline on this call. A special thank you goes out to the members of Rockwell Baptist Church who graciously opened their doors and allowed us to set up an incident command post on their campus. Also a special thanks to Telfair County Commissioners Purvis and Cravey who showed up to provide support as well as provided a meal for responders. Our fire, road, and EMS departments also showed up in force to help us as well. Thanks to all of our supporters who stood in the gap and prayed for us during this incident. Again, God heard these prayers and put a hedge of protection around all of us. And finally, thanks to those who reached out to offer equipment or other support during this incident. Again, too many to list. Please continue to pray for all of our first responders as they perform a dangerous or sometimes deadly job and put their lives on the line daily for us. We would covet those prayers.

Key takeaways from the incident:

There truly is no such thing as a “routine” call. Deputies frequently respond to similar calls as this with no further concerns or response. You never know when “that” call is going to come in. We train for such incidents as this, but you can never fully be prepared until it truly happens in real time. I commend each responder who worked this incident for being professional, patient, and proficient in your actions.

From a communication standpoint, this incident occurred in one of the worst areas of reception in Telfair County. Our phones, radios, and Southern Linc units were basically useless in this area. We struggled to communicate with each other by any means which is very frustrating during a very fluid and constantly evolving incident.

In keeping with the above statement, your safety is of the utmost importance to our office and me personally. I regret that I was unable to make any sort of social media post due to limited reception in the area. However, we had a safe perimeter set up to ensure no innocent bystanders were allowed to enter the incident area, nor the offender to leave said area. I have always tried to be very diligent and transparent with updating the public during these types of incidents, but unfortunately I just wasn’t able to do that this time, and I apologize for any fear or frustration this may have caused within the community. Believe me, we shared in your frustration. Moving forward, we would like to explore making improvements in the communication infrastructure in this area of our county.

Please remember our first responder spouses/significant others and families during incidents like this. Two deputies were fired upon in an ambush-styled attack yesterday with one car being hit at least three times. Their spouses received very little communication from the field and were understandably concerned for their safety. Like you, they were frustrated due to lack of communication from their loved ones.

There will be no further details or statements regarding this incident, as it is still an active case. Thanks again for your understanding and support.

Thank you, Telfair, for helping our fellow Georgians! Andrea and I went to Brantley County with a load of supplies for first responders Sunday afternoon. We spent a few minutes with Sheriff Len Davis who expressed how humble and grateful he is over all that is being done for his community. Many more homes were lost this weekend as the fires raged, but rain has brought a little encouragement. The number one need Sheriff Davis named was prayer. Please continue to pray for more rain which looks promising this coming weekend. In addition to prayer, we’d like to continue helping meet other needs. Below are lists of things needed for first responders and/or residents. If you’d like to donate, you can drop items off under the shelter at the old jail beside the courthouse. Thank you so much!

Other items not on these lists are plastic totes with lids, new or gently used towels, blankets, and sheets labeled by size, and $25 gift cards to Circle K, Walmart, and Dollar General.

🔥PLEASE SHARE🔥

As previously stated, Telfair County is currently under both a state and county burn ban. I can’t overemphasize the danger of ANY burning during these extreme drought conditions we are currently experiencing. Please understand that this means no burning of ANY kind is acceptable, even burn barrels. Also, check for any hanging chains or other metal that can come into contact with the highways and throw sparks which in turn can cause fires. Yesterday afternoon, there were several spot fires started on highway 280 from hanging chains. Also please understand that if we catch you burning during this ban, you can and will be charged for ignoring this directive. We’ve already begun to write citations for this offense.

Please do your part to help protect our county. If you see any open fires burning, call 911 to report it. And let’s continue to pray for our fellow counties who are fighting an unprecedented battle against wildfires right now as well as for much needed rain for our area. Thanks for your adherence to this directive.
