I’m a day late on posting introductions to our firefighters so, continuing our introductions, next is Richard Trahern. He has been with McRae volunteer fire dept since 2021 working his way up to Captain in the department.

I asked Richard What inspired you to want to become a volunteer firefighter?

“I have always loved the excitement that comes with calls that we get. I’m grateful to have had the firefighters before me lead by example. “

What is your favorite part about serving your community?

“My favorite part about serving our community is how much we all come together to help each other. I love it when kids come by the station to check out the fire trucks. And our department is a family anytime no matter what. We look forward to serving McRae in any way we can.”

Continuing our getting to know our firefighters series. Next up is Wes Payan who we affectionately refer to as Pedro. He is not only our Assistant Chief but also our Fire Department Chaplin. Pedro has been a volunteer firefighter for 20+years. And full time for 5 years. He is always available whenever needed and he has love for everyone in our community.

I asked Pedro what inspired him to become a firefighter and this is his reply.

“What inspired me to become a ff? Well, there are a few reasons. One it's an adrenaline rush. Big red lights. Siren. Playing with fire.
On the serious side though, its a way to show others Jesus. It's a way to show others what christ did for me. In my worst times, he's there. It's a way to get to know the community. People are always watching and know when you are genuine. In times of trouble, they know who will be there no matter what. I can show them to Jesus in there worst times. Show them God's love. Give them one more chance to make a decision for eternity.

Also, cause I enjoy it. Yes, there have been times its been hard. There's been times quiting seemed easier, but then I remember why (see previous comments).

My favorite part of serving my community is getting to know them. When you put God first, helping people and loving them is a natural thing. Yes, sometimes we get hurt. But God is good and he still loves people so I do my best to be like him.”

We wanted to say thank you again to the wonderful community response that always comes together to help each other in times of need. We also want to share the miracle of life because some of our volunteers helped bring a baby into the world. Jon, Meagan, Clay and TJ. They worked as a team and we’re very proud of them. The received a pin for their actions.

Good evening McRae! We thought it might be a good idea to get to know our volunteer firefighters. Maybe it can be a distraction from all this heat 🥵🥵🥵

We’ll do a weekly post introducing everyone. We’ll start with our fearless leader, our chief.

Jon Payan has been a firefighter for 24 years! We asked what made you want to be a firefighter and this was his response;
“I became a firefighter because it was a dream of mine since I was a child. My uncle was a firefighter and I always looked up to him. I love meeting and helping people.”

We all look up to our chief and he will reach out and help anyone no matter what. I’ve got some pictures of Jon doing his favorite thing, fighting fires. Thank you for your service Chief!
