As we celebrate our nation’s independence with family, friends, and fireworks, we wish everyone a fun, memorable, and most importantly, safe holiday weekend.

Please remember:
🎆 Use fireworks responsibly and keep a safe distance from others.
🚗 Never drink and drive. Designate a sober driver or arrange a safe ride home.
🛥️ If you’re spending time on the water, wear your life jacket, boat responsibly, and never operate a boat while impaired.
🚦 Whether you’re traveling across town or across the state, slow down, buckle up, stay alert, and watch for increased holiday traffic.

Our dispatchers and first responders will be here serving our communities throughout the holiday. Help us by making safety your top priority so everyone can enjoy a wonderful Independence Day.

As we start to celebrate Independence Day with family, friends, and fireworks, Telfair Wheeler E-911 wants everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

🚨 Call 911 if:
• A firework causes a fire.
• Someone has a serious injury or medical emergency.
• There is an immediate threat to life or property.
• You witness dangerous or reckless behavior that requires an emergency response.

📞 Please DO NOT call 911 for:
• To report hearing fireworks in your neighborhood.
• To ask if fireworks are legal.
• General complaints about holiday celebrations that are not emergencies.
* To ask what time the fireworks start

Every non-emergency call can delay help for someone experiencing a true emergency.

🎇 Fireworks Safety Tips:
• Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby.
• Never relight a firework that doesn’t go off.
• Stay a safe distance away after lighting fireworks.
• Never use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Dispose of used fireworks by soaking them in water before throwing them away.

🚗 Celebrate Responsibly
If your holiday plans include alcohol, don’t drink and drive. Designate a sober driver, call a friend, or use a ride service. One poor decision can change lives forever. Help keep our roads safe for everyone this Independence Day.

Why does 911 ask so many questions?

Something we hear very often is “STOP ASKING SO MANY QUESTIONS, JUST SEND SOMEONE!” And “WHY ARE YOU ASKING SO MANY QUESTIONS?”
We understand that when you’re calling, you’re having an emergency and just want someone there immediately, but you still need to answer the questions we ask.
We can assure you that our questions are not delaying the response. There’s more than one person on the call and in the center dispatching.
What can delay response is refusal to answer the questions.
Why?
Because when you call, we do not know what is going on without you telling us. Answering the questions we ask aids us in providing accurate responses and assuring safety for both our units and the public.
Some of the questions may seem silly to you in the moment, but there is a reason behind every question asked.
