✨ Black History Month Spotlight ✨

Did you know that modern EMS has its roots in a groundbreaking Black-led organization?

In the 1960s, the Freedom House Ambulance Service was founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At a time when emergency medical care was inconsistent and often inadequate, Freedom House changed everything. Staffed primarily by African American men from the local community, this program provided some of the first formally trained paramedics in the United States.

With support from physicians like Dr. Peter Safar the father of CPR, Freedom House introduced advanced life-saving techniques, structured medical training, and created standards of care that became the foundation of today’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

Many practices we now consider routine—such as advanced airway management, cardiac care, and on-scene medical decision-making—were pioneered by Freedom House paramedics.

Despite facing systemic racism and limited recognition at the time, their impact was undeniable. The Freedom House model directly influenced the creation of modern EMS systems across the country.

This Black History Month, we honor the legacy of the Freedom House Ambulance Service and recognize the vital role Black innovators have played—and continue to play—in saving lives every day. 🖤🚑

Dell first joined Telfair County back in her early EMS career. And again few years ago as a part-time paramedic. Over the past several months, she transitioned to a full-time role and served as EMS Captain. We are excited to announce her recent promotion to EMS Director.
Dell brings over 20 years of pre-hospital EMS experience, along with extensive knowledge and proven supervisory leadership. Her dedication to patient care and service excellence makes her a tremendous asset to our community.
Dell is happily married to her husband, James. Together, they have six children, multiple grandchildren, and several “fur-grandchildren.”
We are thrilled to have Dell in this leadership role and look forward to seeing how far she can take EMS in Telfair County.
