As we start another wonderful school year the Nelson County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone about school bus safety. When you see a school bus stopped with the stop arm out both directions of travel must stop until the stop arm is brought in and lights stop flashing. Failure to follow this can land you a $100 fine and 6 points on your license.

Not sure how to decide if your child is ready to move out of a booster?

This checklist can help you know when your child is ready to move to a vehicle seat belt.
• ✓ Sit tall without slouching
• ✓ Maintain back and buttocks against the seatback
• ✓ Keep knees completely bent over the seat edge
• ✓ Position feet flat on the floor of the car
• ✓ Comfortably maintain this position the entire ride
• ✓ Position the position vehicle seat belt correctly every ride
• ✓ State laws vary on when kids can ride without a booster.

Nelson County Sheriff's Office and the Nelson/Griggs District Health Unit will also be present at the Car Seat Checkup Event. The Sheriff's Office will be handing out fingerprinting Identification kits for the kids.
