Spokane County Fire District 9 Proudly serving the citizens of North Spokane County Spokane Fire District 9 covers 122 square miles and protecting a population of 50,000.

We operate from nine fire stations, using a mix of 82 career personnel and 39 volunteers.

🚨 MULTIPLE-ALARM COMMERCIAL FIRE

Spokane County Fire District 9 is on scene at a large commercial structure fire near Nevada Street and North Newport Highway.

This is a multiple-alarm fire, with District 9 crews being assisted by multiple units from surrounding agencies.

Crews will be operating in the area for an extended period of time. Please stay clear of the area and give emergency crews room to work.

Spokane County Fire District 9 will be at the 5th Annual Step to Remember next Saturday, September 12, at Hop Mountain Taproom and Grill in Mead.

Come out and support a great cause as our community comes together to honor the fallen and the families of loved ones lost.

There will be activities throughout the day, including the Step Challenge, live music, food and drinks, a silent auction and raffle, military vehicles, a helicopter arrival, kids' activities, and more.

🚒 Planning for the Future of Fire District 9

You’ve heard us mention it several times, especially as we talk about Propositions 1 and 2 on the November 3 ballot: our Strategic Plan.

The planning process began in 2025 and created a roadmap for the future of Spokane County Fire District 9. It helps guide decisions about staffing, apparatus, equipment, facilities, training, firefighter safety, and how we prepare for the continued needs of our community.

Having a plan allows us to look beyond today and make thoughtful, data-driven decisions about where we invest our resources. The goal is simple: continue providing the best level of service possible to our community while being responsible and cost-effective with the resources we have.

Our Strategic Plan plays an important role in the planning behind Proposition 1 and Proposition 2 and the direction we are headed as a Fire District.

🚒 Thank You to Our Volunteers

Our volunteer firefighters continue to play an important role in serving the Spokane County Fire District 9 community.

This summer was a powerful example of that commitment. On June 16, as the Upriver Fire unfolded, our volunteers worked side by side with our career crews throughout the day. Just weeks later, when multiple fires broke out across our region on August 1, they stepped up once again, with many remaining engaged through the evening of August 2.

And those are just two examples. Throughout the summer, our volunteers responded to countless other incidents, trained alongside our crews, and gave their time when our community needed them.

They have jobs, families, and responsibilities outside the fire district, yet they keep answering the call.

To every District 9 volunteer, thank you for your time, sacrifice, and commitment to our community. We are incredibly grateful to have you on our team. 🚒❤️

🔥 Investing in Your Fire District: November 3, 2026 Ballot

On November 3, Spokane County Fire District 9 will have two propositions on the ballot.

The work behind these propositions began in early 2025 as part of our long-term planning for the future of Fire District 9. Since then, we have spent significant time evaluating our equipment, facilities, emergency response needs, and the continued growth of our community.

This work led to the development of the District’s first-ever Strategic Plan and Capital Facilities Plan, helping us identify current needs and establish priorities for the future.

As a result of this planning, voters will consider two propositions in November:

PROPOSITION 1 — LEVY LID LIFT

The levy lid lift would allow Fire District 9 to:
• Increase the fire levy lid lift for the first time in 45 years
• Establish a Fire Apparatus Replacement Program
• Replace critical fire and EMS equipment
• Improve staffing levels
• Invest in critical training programs and equipment

PROPOSITION 2 — CAPITAL BOND

The capital bond would allow Fire District 9 to:
• Capital Bond Investments in our fire stations for the first time in more than 30 years
• Replace outdated Fire Station 99
• Renovate four fire stations
• Renovate the maintenance and logistics building
• Construct a new training classroom

As we approach November, we will share more details about both propositions and answer questions along the way.

🚒 WE’RE HIRING | ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF

Spokane County Fire District 9 is seeking an experienced fire service leader to join our team as our Assistant Fire Chief of Risk Reduction, Inspections, and Investigations.

This position will provide strategic leadership for community risk reduction, fire prevention and inspections, development and plans review, and fire investigations. As a member of the District’s leadership team, this position will also help shape the future of Fire District 9 as our organization and community continue to grow.

We’re looking for a collaborative and experienced leader committed to serving our personnel and community.

Please submit applications by October 4, 2026, for first review. The position is open until filled.

Spokane County Fire District 9 is proud to welcome Dr. Avigail Baehr as our new Physician Advisor, who will provide oversight for Spokane County’s first full-time, fire-based ambulance transport service.

Dr. Baehr brings extensive experience in emergency medicine, education, research, and quality improvement. She studied at Vanderbilt University and the University of Pennsylvania before completing her Emergency Medicine Residency at Denver Health Medical Center in Colorado.

Throughout her career, Dr. Baehr has served as an Emergency Medicine Physician at several hospitals across California and Washington. Since 2023, she has practiced at Sacred Heart Medical Center here in Spokane.

In her role as Physician Advisor, Dr. Baehr will work closely with our paramedics and EMTs to review patient care, strengthen training and education, and help guide the continued development of our EMS services. She will also serve as an important connection between the care our crews provide in the field and the larger healthcare system, helping bring current medical standards and best practices directly into the care we provide our community.

As Fire District 9 continues to grow and advance our EMS programs, we are excited to have Dr. Baehr providing the medical leadership, guidance, and support that helps our crews deliver the highest level of care possible.
