If you are going to choose one week to get outside and experience fall birding in Crawford County, make it this one.
Late September into early October brings one of the most exciting moments of the season. Across our marshes, lakes, forests, and fields, the last warblers of the year are moving south just as sparrows, waterfowl, and northern migrants begin arriving.
It is the changing of the guard, and Crawford County gives you a front-row seat.
This week, look for Yellow-rumped, Blackpoll, and Palm Warblers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets moving through. White-throated, White-crowned, Lincoln’s, and Swamp Sparrows are arriving. On the water, Wood Ducks are joined by Green-winged Teal, American Wigeon, Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler, and Gadwall.
Remember to look up. Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s Hawks, Northern Harriers, Ospreys, and Bald Eagles may be overhead, while exposed fall mudflats can bring Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs and Pectoral Sandpipers into view.
The best part? You do not have to travel far to find remarkable habitat.
Explore Pymatuning State Park around Miller Ponds, Hartstown Marsh, Linesville, and the lake. Walk the Tsuga and Deer Run trails at Erie National Wildlife Refuge near Guys Mills. Scan the expansive wetlands of Conneaut Marsh and State Game Lands 213. Or spend a morning at Woodcock Creek Lake just outside Meadville.
Few places give you this much variety in one county.
One tip to remember: watch for a cold front moving down from the north. When temperatures drop and the wind shifts out of the north, the following morning can produce some of the best migration activity of the entire season. Set the alarm a little earlier. It can be worth it.
If you are visiting Pymatuning today, Spooktacular runs through 8:30 p.m., and parking near the contact station may be limited. Head out early for quieter birding or make Erie National Wildlife Refuge your destination instead.
Bring binoculars, comfortable shoes, an extra layer, and a spotting scope if you have one. Then slow down, listen, and see what Crawford County puts in front of you.
This is one of those brief fall windows you do not want to miss.
