Market Street Properties
There have been several posts recently showing community artwork on the side of the Neon Moon building. While that creativity is appreciated, it has also brought renewed attention to a larger issue: these two Market Street properties are clearly eyesores.
I’ve heard from many residents, especially those in Kepler, who raised concerns about these buildings. I share that frustration. So the obvious question is: why hasn’t anything been done?
Like many issues, the situation is more complicated than it may seem.
The Roda’s property is owned by the Redevelopment Authority (RDA), but the Neon Moon is privately owned by an out-of-town individual. Over time, the RDA has explored multiple options for Roda’s, including selling it and demolition. Unfortunately:
- There has been no serious interest from buyers willing to take on the project
- Demolition is very expensive
As for the Neon Moon property:
- It is privately owned
- The owner is reportedly asking over $120,000
- It is not in violation of any codes
- Property taxes are being paid
That limits what the City can realistically do.
In an ideal world:
- A buyer would purchase both properties
- Renovate them
- Bring in businesses and restore them to productive use
In reality:
- Rehab interest has been minimal
- Demolition costs are high
- Legal authority is limited on privately owned properties
There is no perfect solution.
At this point:
- The RDA is continuing to evaluate options for the Roda’s property
- The City has very limited options regarding the Neon Moon property under current conditions
We remain open to any viable solutions that would bring these properties back into productive use.
