Meadville 1825

Meadville 1825 A year-long celebration of the most prolific year in Meadville, PA's history - 1825!

Meadville 1825 is a year-long initiative beginning in January 2025 to commemorate the Bicentennial of a pivotal year in Meadville and Crawford County's history. This initiative celebrates the rapid change and growth experienced in 1825, along with the many historic events that shaped our community. Organized as a collaboration involving the Unitarian Universalist Church of Meadville, the John Brow

n Tannery Association, Allegheny College's Bentley Hall, Christ Episcopal Church, Stone United Methodist Church, and the Crawford County Courthouse, the program brings together a dedicated committee supported by volunteers from across the city and county. Thanks to support from the Crawford County Heritage Foundation, we are able to offer a series of free monthly public programs designed to honor our rich heritage and foster a climate of appreciation for our shared history. Join us in this journey through time and share in the pride of our heritage as we celebrate the extraordinary events of 1825 together as a community unified by the stories of our past.

John James Audubon (1785–1851) was America’s greatest wildlife artist and a pioneering naturalist. His book "The Birds of America" (1827–1838) featured life-sized, lifelike bird portraits that combined art and science. Audubon’s work advanced ornithology, inspired conservation, and shaped how Americans viewed their natural world.

John James Audubon agreed with Benjamin Franklin's opinion that the wild turkey, being a "respectable Bird" and a "Bird of Courage," would have been a better choice for the United States' national symbol than the Bald Eagle, which he described as having a "bad moral Character."
