To wrap up , let's look at the Antiquities Act. πŸ”Ž

This 120-year-old act laid the foundation for historic preservation in the United States by giving the president power to designate national monuments and establishing the preservation of archeological and historical sites on public lands. The first designated monument was Devils Tower in Wyoming, a geologic feature considered sacred by indigenous people.

πŸ’ What's a national monument that you find speaks to your own sense of place?

Our latest project highlight for is the Stone Memorial Library repairs funded by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. πŸ“–

This Conneautville library was founded in 1904 by Julia L. Stone in memory of her husband, James A. Stone. For over 120 years, this library has served as a resource for Conneautville and its surrounding municipalities, providing books, tech access, educational programs, and more.

To ensure the Stone Memorial Library can continue serving the community, CDBG funds were used to repair and repoint the building's exterior brick walls. Now the library can continue to serve its local communities for many more years from a building that ties to local Crawford history.

πŸ‘ CCP is dedicated to supporting public services like our local libraries and preserving buildings that build a sense of place for our residents.

When we kicked off our vision for Crawford County, we knew we needed to launch a program that jump-started on-the-ground activities and invested in the County's people, places, and prosperity.

Enter the Mini-Grant Program. πŸ”¦ Over the course of two years, CCP funded 17 community development projects, whose impact spanned across all 47 municipalities. To celebrate the success of this program, we developed a storymap highlighting these projects.

It's , and today we're highlighting our Mini-Grant Program project with the Titusville Historical Society - Titusville, PA. πŸ›οΈ

With Mini-Grant funding, the Society purchases museum-grade furnishings to support its new exhibit, "T.C. Joy & His Remarkable Radiators," which showcases 19th-century cast-iron radiators made in Titusville. This exhibit tells the story of T.C. Joy's company, family, industrial venture, and economic impact on the region.

With support from the Mini-Grant, the Society added to its array of exhibits and galleries that connect residents to their local history and attract visitors to learn more about the County's historic significance.

CCP is proud to support the local historical societies that generate a sense of place in our communities. πŸ‘

Looking through the 1976 annual report for the Crawford County Planning Commission, you'll see historic preservation and placemaking at work. πŸ”Ž

Three sites were added to the County's Register of Significant Sites by the Commission's Significant Sites Committee:
πŸͺ΅ McGill House: one of the oldest surviving homes in the French Creek Valley
πŸŽ“ Bentley Hall: where the first formal classes at Allegheny College were taught
🚣 Portion of the French Creek Feeder Canal by Terrace Street

What are some other historic places in Crawford County that you think deserve preservation efforts?
