⚠️ Community Focused Friday: Electric Bike & Scooter Battery Safety ⚠️

As electric bikes and scooters continue to grow in popularity, it’s important to remember that the batteries powering these devices can pose serious fire risks if not properly built, maintained, or charged.

Yesterday’s electric bike fire was determined to have originated from a homemade battery pack.

With the rising cost of replacement batteries, more people are attempting to build or modify their own battery packs. Others are connecting multiple battery packs together (“daisy chaining”) to increase range or performance. While these modifications may seem like a cost-effective solution, improperly assembled or modified lithium-ion battery systems can fail catastrophically, leading to fires, explosions, and significant property damage.

The security camera footage from yesterday’s incident demonstrates just how quickly these fires can develop. What begins as a small amount of smoke can escalate into a fully involved fire within seconds, leaving little time to react.

🔋 Battery Safety Tips:
• Use batteries and chargers approved by the manufacturer.
• Avoid building, modifying, or repairing battery packs unless you have the proper training and expertise.
• Do not connect multiple battery packs together unless the system is specifically designed and approved by the manufacturer.
• Never charge batteries unattended or while sleeping.
• Charge batteries on hard, non-combustible surfaces away from exits.
• Inspect batteries regularly for swelling, damage, overheating, or unusual odors.
• Discontinue use immediately if a battery shows signs of damage.

🚒 Lithium-ion battery fires burn extremely hot, produce toxic smoke, and can reignite after being extinguished.

A homemade battery pack or improperly connected battery system may save money upfront, but the risk of fire can be devastating. Take battery safety seriously and help protect your family, neighbors, and community.

Please take battery safety seriously and share this message with anyone who owns an electric bike, scooter, hoverboard, or other lithium-ion battery-powered device.

A few minutes of prevention can prevent a devastating fire. 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️🔋🔥

If you have concerns about how or where electric bikes, scooters, batteries, or other lithium-ion powered devices are being stored or charged, please contact the fire department directly

This morning at 9:35 AM, “A” Shift was dispatched for a reported electric bicycle fire with exposure to a commercial building.

Ladder 16-9, Engine 16-2, Medic 16-7, and Chief 16 responded, & first-alarm mutual aid assignment initiated.

Ladder 16-9 arrived to find a mostly extinguished E-bike near the structure that was still smoking. A bystander had used a fire extinguisher prior to arrival, & the battery pack had ultimately burned itself out.

Crews checked for hotspots, ventilated the structure, & completed cleanup operations.

No injuries were reported. 🚒🔥🔋

It was a busy night & early morning for “A” Shift with two fire incidents handled within several hours.

🚒 Structure Fire – 8:24 PM

Last evening at 8:24 PM, “A” Shift was dispatched for a reported structure fire with smoke filling the residence.

Ladder 16-9, Medic 16-17, and Chief 16 responded, with the mutual aid first alarm assignment initiated at dispatch.

Upon arrival, the 16-9 crew encountered smoke conditions on both the first and second floors of a nine-unit apartment building. Meadville Police Department assisted with resident evacuation.

Due to the smoke conditions, efforts to locate the source of the fire, and the complexity of the building’s floor plan, mutual aid resources were continued to the scene.

Mutual aid companies assisted with ventilation, water supply setup, scene standby, & cleanup operations.

🔥 Porch Fire – 2:35 AM

This morning at 2:35 AM, “A” Shift was dispatched for a reported working porch fire.

Upon arrival, crews located a small fire involving approximately half of the front porch. The 16-9 crew stretched a handline and quickly extinguished the fire, preventing further extension.

Mutual aid companies were subsequently placed back in service. No injuries were reported.

We would like to thank Vernon Central, West Mead #1 Volunteer Fire Company, West Mead #2 Volunteer Fire Department, & the Meadville Police Department (FOP Lodge 97 - Meadville City Police Officers) for their assistance & support on both incidents.
