⚠️ GENERATOR SAFETY: PLEASE READ & SHARE ⚠️
Recently, the Upper Allen Fire Department responded to two separate calls for Carbon Monoxide alarms, and both incidents were entirely due to improper generator use.
When the power goes out, generators are a great asset, but they can be deadly if used incorrectly. Carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and can kill in as little as 5 minutes.
We are asking everyone in the community to take 60 seconds to carefully read through the infographic below. It contains critical, life-saving instructions on backup power safety.
🚨 Safety Tips:
The 20-Foot Rule: Always keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home, doors, and windows, with the exhaust facing away. Never run them in a garage or enclosed space.
Transfer Switches: Never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet. To power your home's electrical system safely and prevent dangerous backfeeding, a professional transfer switch is required.
CO Alarms: Ensure you have working carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas.
If your CO alarm goes off or you start experiencing dizziness, headaches, or nausea: get to fresh air immediately and call 911.
