74% growth in annual 🚒 call volume since 2012 in Hampden Township is an important statistic as part of critical conversation today at a Special Meeting of the Hampden Township Board of Commissioners! Over 20 volunteer members were present as Chief Churchill presented a plan to build a Combination Fire Department. Fire Commissioner Argot started the discussion highlighting the 70 years of dedicated volunteer service and acknowledging our challenges to meet changes in community demographics and growth. We thank the Board of Commissioners for their thoughtful questions and commitment to community safety. Tonight for training our volunteers practiced breathing apparatus confidence skills. A breathing apparatus or SCBA is used by a firefighter to enter a hazardous area such as a smoke filled building or an area with limited oxygen. Safety tips during a severe thunderstorm:

🌳 Avoid trees, power lines, and other outdoor hazards.
📱 Monitor trusted weather sources for updates and be prepared to act if conditions worsen.
🚗 If you're driving, slow down and never drive through flooded roadways.

Behind every emergency response is a lot of work that most people never see.

This evening, our volunteer Fire Police were busy checking equipment, cleaning apparatus, and making sure our vehicles are ready for the next call. Operational readiness isn’t just about responding when the pager goes off. It’s about putting in the time beforehand so our equipment, our people, and our community are ready when it matters most.

To our Fire Police volunteers: thank you for the hours you invest behind the scenes. Your commitment helps ensure we’re prepared to serve Hampden Township safely and effectively, 24 hours a day.

A little emergency access planning turned into an unexpected roadside assist.

While Police Chief Yerg and Fire Chief Churchill were out looking at access needs in local neighborhoods, they came across a disabled vehicle in the roadway. They stopped, pushed it safely off the road, and assisted the driver.

Both chiefs spend plenty of time working on budgets, policies, and long-term planning, but it was nice to roll up their sleeves and get back to their roots on the streets.
