Community Reminder: Unlicensed & Disabled Vehicles
The Mechanicsburg Police Department would like to give residents advance notice of an upcoming community cleanup initiative regarding the Village ordinance on unlicensed and disabled vehicles.
Beginning Monday, July 27, 2026, officers will conduct a village-wide survey to identify vehicles and vehicle parts that may not comply with the ordinance. If a potential violation is observed, a notice will be provided to the property owner or occupant explaining the specific violation and the steps needed to bring the property into compliance.
Our goal is education and voluntary compliance—not enforcement. Over the next two weeks, we encourage residents to take a look around their property and address any vehicles or vehicle parts that may fall under this ordinance before notices are issued. We hope this advance notice gives everyone plenty of time to make any necessary arrangements.
What is considered an unlicensed or disabled vehicle?
A vehicle may be considered in violation if it:
Does not have a current, valid license plate and registration; or
Is disabled or inoperable because it is extensively damaged, dismantled, or missing major components such as an engine, transmission, wheels, tires, battery, radiator, or other essential parts needed for legal operation on Ohio roadways.
The ordinance also applies to vehicle parts, including items such as tires, wheels, engines, transmissions, and other major automotive components that are stored outdoors on residential property.
Under the Village ordinance, unlicensed or disabled vehicles and vehicle parts may not be stored outdoors on residential property unless they are kept inside a completely enclosed garage or other enclosed structure.
If you receive a notice, what should you do?
The notice will explain the specific violation observed on your property and the steps needed to correct it. Residents who receive a notice will have 72 hours to bring the property into compliance by one or more of the following:
Obtain a current, valid registration for an unlicensed vehicle (if the vehicle is otherwise legally operable);
Remove the vehicle or vehicle parts from the property; or
Place the vehicle or vehicle parts inside a fully enclosed garage or other approved enclosed structure.
