Nicole Morell
President, Medford City Council
Medford, MA 02155

Dear President Morell,
In its meeting on October 12, 2022, The Medford Human Rights Commission (HRC) reviewed the
minutes of the HRC meeting of October 12, 2020 where the Commission voted to endorse the principles
and goals of community control of police surveillance (by the City Council). This motion was passed
after presentations by legal council from the American Civil Liberties Union, and several members
(including two attorneys) of Medford People Power who also answered questions and concerns from
the various Commissioners.
The HRC then voted to reaffirm the 2020 vote of the HRC, and to urge all member of the Medford City
Council to support the current CCOPS ordinance that is under consideration by the Council. I am also
sending a copy of this communication to all members of the City Council and to Mayor Breanna Lung-
Koehn.
Thank you for your consideration and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or for any
additional information.
Sincerely,

Munir Jirmanus
On behalf of the Medford Human Rights Commission

Re: Vote Yes on Question 4!

We, the Medford Human Rights’ Commission, support the Safer Roads Campaign and will be voting Yes on Question 4! Medford is home to community members from many corners of the world. Voting YES on question 4 would allow Medford to advance conversations of safety, equity, antiracism and growth. Please join the Medford HRC in our commitment to making Medford more equitable.

“Voting Yes on 4 is just common sense: all of us will be safer if all drivers on the road pass a driving test, have insurance and have a license. Everyone needs to get to work and get to school, so let’s do everything we can to get people where they’re going safely.”
-Roy Vasque, President, Massachusetts Major Cities Chief of Police Association.

The Medford Human Rights Commission is looking to onboard new members who are ready to work towards the goals of equity and antiracism in the City of Medford. Our current mission reads, “The mission of the Human Rights Commission is to protect the civil rights of Medford residents, reinforce a positive community atmosphere, work with community groups and agencies to educate, promote understanding to eliminate prejudice and intolerance, and to mediate within the community whenever needed.”
Our commission is currently working to streamline and improve the ways in which we serve the Medford Community. We are excited to diversify our team and BIPOC candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Please complete the HRC Application Form and submit it to [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you!
