For decades, we told our first responders: We've got your back. You serve through danger and sacrifice, and we'll make sure your retirement is secure. Automatic cost-of-living adjustments were part of that promise.

Then, in 2011, those COLAs were suspended. Thirteen years later, while the cost of living has soared, the retirement benefits earned by officers and firefighters haven't moved. A pension that was adequate in 2011 doesn't go as far today. Your groceries cost more. Your utilities cost more. Your healthcare costs more. But your check stayed the same.

That stops now.

I'm a proud co-sponsor of S2065, legislation that reinstates automatic cost-of-living adjustments for retired first responders who've been retired at least 10 years. The bill is designed to help those who need it most — the longer-term retirees who've already had a decade of eroded purchasing power — while being fiscally responsible about how we implement it.

Governor Sherrill is signing my legislation, S757, into law. This bill helps local governments finance the acquisition of firefighting apparatus and equipment — cutting through red tape so our fire departments can get the vehicles and gear they actually need, when they need them.

Our firefighters put their lives on the line for us. The least we can do in Trenton is make sure they’re not stuck fighting outdated funding rules on top of it.

Grateful for the partnership with Senator John Burzichelli that got this done.
