We’re moving! The Long Island Volunteer Chapter page will be sunsetting, and we’ll be utilizing our new Long Island Volunteer Chapter Facebook group. We are making this change to allow for greater engagement, increase awareness of our chapters’ connection to our organization as well as create more opportunities for communication among chapter members. This Memorial Day we honor and remember those who never returned from battle. For those that did, we are here to help. Canine Companions has provided hundreds of service dogs to veterans with disabilities. Vietnam Veteran Larry lived with undiagnosed PTSD for many years. He just spent the past two weeks with us learning to work with Service Dog Koz. Larry says, “Koz has already changed my life!” Canine Companions is leading the service dog industry so people can lead lives with greater independence, confidence and joy. Our dogs – and all follow-up services – are provided at no charge to our clients. Larry gave this emotional speech on Friday during graduation ceremonies. It's been 50 years since Larry returned from Vietnam, and he tells us he's never felt welcomed home until now. On this Memorial Day 2021, welcome home Larry!

“I love teaching, I love being in class and interacting with students. Students should be able to interact with people with disabilities without thinking it’s something out of this world. We should get our students prepared for whatever comes before them in life.” On this , we'd like to recognize retiring Northeast Board member Javier Robles, who is also a 3-time Canine Companions successor graduate, currently with Service Dog Del!

Javier is a teaching instructor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health in the School of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers University. Since joining the Rutgers faculty in 2013, he has been a pioneering teacher, introducing the first undergraduate course to explore the lived experience of people with disabilities. He earned his law degree from Seton Hall Law School and served 13 years as deputy director of the New Jersey Division of Disability Services. Since joining the Northeast Region Advisory Board in 2006, Javier has been an avid supporter of Canine Companions, and served as DogFest NJ Chair for several years. Javier says he won't be a stranger to Canine Companions! Thank you Javier, for all you do for our organization, and for being a terrific advocate for people with disabilities!
