Happy 82nd birthday Smokey Bear! Smokey is celebrating his birthday today by flying low along the Jersey Shore aboard a New Jersey Forest Fire Service helicopter, waving to beachgoers from Cape May to Asbury Park, with special flyovers of Atsion Lake in Wharton State Forest and Lake Nummy in Belleplain State Forest.

Commemorative Smokey Bear beach badges will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for visitors of Atsion Recreation Area (Wharton State Forest), Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, Belleplain State Forest, Corson’s Inlet State Park, Island Beach State Park and the Ocean City Music Pier.

The flight is scheduled to begin over Cape May at approximately 1 p.m. and travel north along the coast, ending in Asbury Park around 3:30 p.m. Earlier in the day, Smokey will fly over Atsion Lake in Wharton State Forest at approximately 11 a.m. and Lake Nummy in Belleplain State Forest at approximately 11:45 a.m.

A banner plane displaying a "Happy Birthday, Smokey Bear" message will lead the flight.

The birthday flight is made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service.

For nearly a century, Smokey Bear has inspired generations of Americans to help prevent wildfires with his timeless message: “Only you can prevent wildfires.”

Happy August!! While some areas in New Jersey have recently received substantial amounts of rain, not so much here in Medford. We’ve only received .38” in the last week here. We are currently in a moderate drought status (see map below). As always, with us being in a Wildland/Urban interface area, everyone should remain wildfire conscious! Clearing dead timber and brush on your property is very important to do in this area.

Zach is the Son of our own Dave Doc MacBride, Past Chief of Lindenwold FD and Past Battalion Chief with Medford FD. Best of luck in your new job. Our members responded to a motor vehicle accident Friday evening at Rt. 70 and Old Marlton Pike with Union Fire Co. performing accident cleanup, traffic control, assisting Medford EMS with patient removal, and standing by for vehicle tow services. Mutual Aid EMS was provided by Lumberton,Hampton Lakes, and Virtua Paramedics. 🚑🚑🚓🚓

Please be observant and cautious if you need to travel later and be mindful of potential roadway hazards (ie branches and wires) in the roadway from heavy winds.

⚠️⛈️🌪️ A Tornado Watch has been issued for portions of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania until 9 PM EDT. Thunderstorms this afternoon and evening will be capable of producing damaging winds, tornadoes, frequent lightning, and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding.

Good morning, if you have been smelling smoke and noticing hazy skies the last couple of days , it is more than likely from numerous wildfires in Canada. Today we have an Air Quality Alert in our area. People particularly with respiratory conditions should be hesitant of being outside for long periods of time. Of course, if you think there is an actual fire in your area please do not hesitate to call 911

Taunton and Union Fire Companies of the Medford Fire Department were first on the scene at the Fellowship Alliance Chapel fire on Friday night. Incident Command requested multiple alarms to get the necessary mutual aid equipment and personnel needed to the scene. Companies arrived on the additional alarms from Burlington, Camden, & Atlantic Counties. In the summer heat, personnel must be rotated frequently due to personnel wearing bulky turnout gear, breathing air packs (SCBA), and the strenuous work involved in fire suppression. Additionally, getting equipment such as K12 cutting saws and other firefighting equipment onto multiple level high roofs is very challenging and strenuous.

Mutual aid came from many Burlington County companies, Evesham, Medford Lakes, Lumberton, Mt Laurel, Shamong, Tabernacle, Vincentown, Mt . Holly, Moorestown, Lenola, Hainesport, Hampton Lakes, Beverly, Burlington City, Burlington Twp., Westampton, Eastampton, Riverside, Palmyra, Willingboro, Pemberton, Cinnaminson, Delanco, Riverton, Juliustown, Chesterfield, Springfield, Chatsworth, Bordentown, Mansfield, & McGuire Joint Base. Camden County sent units from Cherry Hill, Audubon, Bellmawr, Haddonfield, Pennsauken, Clementon, Lindenwold, Somerdale & Collingswood. Atlantic County companies were from Waterford, Collings Lake, and Absecon. Some of these stations covered Medford for additional calls in the township which there were a few additional calls. Early on, some companies were diverted to a fully involved pole barn fire in Tabernacle. Emergency Services and firefighter rehab were provided by Medford EMS, Evesham, Tabernacle, Mt. Laurel, & Virtua Paramedics. Numerous Fire Police units handled traffic control from Medford, Medford Lakes, Shamong, & Burlington City. Additional County units were sent from the Fire Marshal’s Office, Burlington County OEM, & the Burlington County Fire & EMS Coordinators, and Cherry Hill FD Mobile Canteen unit providing food and drinks. 2,700 feet of 5”,large diameter hose was laid to maintain an adequate water supply. It was a great job by all involved. Mutual aid is essential on serious fire incidents, particularly during extreme weather conditions. Fortunately, the fire was brought under control with this coordinated effort!

Taunton Fire Company’s firefighters are there for our residents and visitors to Medford 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and have been for 76 years! Now our firefighting “ family” REALLY needs your help!!!

He is Past Chief of the Lindenwold Fire Company and Battalion Chief and Training Officer with Taunton Fire Company, Medford Fire Department.
