America 250: The Flag and the Spirit of 1776

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag for the new United States.

From the Revolutionary generation to the present day, the American flag has stood as a symbol of independence, unity, sacrifice, and the enduring promise of liberty.

As we celebrate America 250, Flag Day reminds us that the ideals of 1776 must be remembered, defended, and passed forward: freedom, self-government, faith, family, service, and love of country.

Here in Suffolk County, those principles continue to live in our homes, communities, veterans, first responders, and civic life.

America 250: Historic Estates and Long Island Heritage

Long Island’s estate era left behind more than grand homes. It left behind architecture, gardens, landscapes, collections, and public spaces that continue to preserve regional heritage.

Here in Suffolk County, historic estates such as Vanderbilt’s Eagle’s Nest in Centerport and Bayard Cutting’s Westbrook in Great River reflect a chapter of Long Island history tied to preservation, education, design, and public benefit.

As America approaches its 250th Anniversary, these preserved places remind us that heritage is not only found in battlefields and documents, but also in the homes, landscapes, and institutions communities choose to protect for future generations.

Statement from Suffolk County & Brookhaven Town Republican Committee Chairman Jesse Garcia: Elimination of Niño Guerrero, Leader of Tren de Aragua Terror Group
______________________

“The successful elimination of Tren de Aragua leader Niño Guerrero is a significant victory for American national security and the safety of our citizens.

“President Donald J. Trump promised to secure our borders, confront transnational criminal organizations, and put American families first. This operation demonstrates that promise in action. Tren de Aragua has terrorized communities through violence, human trafficking, drug smuggling, and murder. Today’s action sends a clear message: those who threaten Americans will be found and brought to justice.

“The Suffolk County Republican Committee proudly supports President Trump, our military, and our law enforcement professionals as they continue to protect our nation, defend our borders, and put America First.

“God Bless America.”

America 250: Long Island’s First Peoples and Living Heritage

Long before Suffolk County existed as a political entity, Long Island was home to Native American communities whose lives were shaped by the land, bays, ocean, and shorelines.

The Shinnecock Nation traces its presence on Long Island back thousands of years and describes a culture rooted in fishing, hunting, farming, whaling, and stewardship of the land and water.

As America approaches its 250th Anniversary, Suffolk County’s story must also honor the Indigenous peoples whose history, culture, and presence remain part of Long Island’s living heritage today.

Preserving that history reminds us that the American story is strongest when it remembers the people, places, and traditions that came before us and continue to shape our communities.

America 250: Sag Harbor, American Enterprise
On eastern Long Island, early commerce grew from both the farm and the sea.

By the 18th century, whaling had become a major industry, and Sag Harbor rose to prominence as an East Coast port, helping link Suffolk County to broader currents of American trade and enterprise.

This history reminds us that local industry, maritime skill, and commercial ambition helped power the growth of both Long Island and the young nation.

America 250: Harbors, Bays, and the Working Waterfront
Suffolk County’s history has always been tied to the water.

Its harbors, bays, and working waterfronts supported fishing, coastal trade, and maritime livelihoods, helping feed families and connect Long Island to the wider Atlantic world.

As we celebrate America 250, we remember that the American story was built not only on battlefields and in statehouses, but also along the docks, coves, and shorelines of communities like ours.

America 250: Fields, Families, and the Foundations of Suffolk

From its earliest villages, Suffolk County was shaped by settlement, labor, and the land.
In Southampton, colonists arrived with seeds, roots, and plant cuttings, beginning a farming tradition that would help define eastern Long Island for generations.

Built on fields, family work, and local self-reliance, and shaped within lands long inhabited by Native communities including the Shinnecock; Suffolk’s agricultural story reflects the discipline and productivity that helped sustain early American life.
