DID YOU KNOW?
Medford is getting new bike racks in our business districts this year!
And a bike rack option has now been added to SeeClickFix, so you can request a rack in locations where you need one or report a broken/damaged one.

Where do you need to park your bike?

Is the route you need to bike or walk blocked with snow?
Let the state and city agencies responsible know. They will come out and clear spots like this when asked, but don't tend to do it without prompting.
Many of the problem areas are not city property, but are the responsibility of Mass. DCR (Department of Conservation and Recreation) or MassDOT. In addition to reporting blockages on SeeClickFix to notify the City of Medford, you can email [email protected] with your specific requests.

The more we make it clear that we need and use these facilities all year 'round, the stronger the case for clearing these corridors as a matter of course. But in the meantime, it really does help if you report specific problem spots!

As we wait for the snow to melt, please be patient on the roads.

The roadways are narrower; alternative routes, bike paths, and bike lanes (where they exist) are mostly still unusable. You are also more likely to encounter people walking or rolling in the street, because sidewalks and curb cuts may not be adequately cleared yet either.

By state law, bicyclists are allowed to use the full lane anywhere except for restricted highways (these signs aren't a special designation, they're just a reminder). And motor vehicle operators are still required to pass vulnerable road users such as bicyclists, pedestrians, road workers, crossing guards, etc, by at least four feet.

So please drive patiently. Even if you don't want to slow down for someone else, you can console yourself that at least a person on a bicycle isn't going to park it in the parking space you shoveled out. :)

The state finally installed turn signals on Route 16 and Boston Ave, where residents have seen countless crashes over the years! We are so hopeful for the predictability and safety improvements this should bring for this important corridor for Medford residents. When we're biking, walking, or driving here, we see SO much red light running here. We're all on board for safety improvements! https://www.bostonglobe.com/2025/05/21/metro/bad-somerville-intersection/?fbclid=IwY2xjawKrNEhleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHpJa2fNHMKPxQW9uCvmjgewv8_qt-b4X3P44hgrg4dFA9jCU-1-4qwQd9CL3_aem_UwmKmIRl7MFAc0sbzK6dUQ

A Somerville resident kept hearing and seeing crashes out his window. So he got to work.

In Massachusetts, it's 4 feet, not 1.5 meters. But if you're quibbling over the difference, you're probably coming too close.
You can cross the center line to pass when the coast is clear. But if you can't pass by the required distance, you should slow down and wait until you can. The cyclist is not required to move over to the edge of the road or the parked cars to give you more room, because that puts them at risk from car doors, blind driveways, right hooks, etc.
It generally doesn't take very long before there's room for the cyclist to move over safely, or there's a gap in oncoming traffic, or one or both people turns off that road, or you have to stop for some other reason anyway.
