Long Island gave America one of its defining literary voices.
Walt Whitman was born in 1819 in West Hills, in the Town of Huntington, at a farmhouse built by his father. He would go on to become one of America’s most influential poets, using his work to capture the energy, diversity, labor, promise, and democratic spirit of the nation.
Whitman’s writing helped give poetic form to the American experiment: individual freedom, common humanity, and faith in the people.
As America approaches its 250th Anniversary, Suffolk County honors Walt Whitman’s legacy as a reminder that the American story is told not only through government and war, but through language, imagination, and the enduring voice of a free people.

Suffolk County has produced athletes whose discipline, talent, and perseverance became part of America’s sports story.
Carl Yastrzemski, born in Southampton and raised in Bridgehampton, carried Long Island roots into one of the most respected careers in Major League Baseball. Over 23 seasons with the Boston Red Sox, he became an 18-time All-Star, a seven-time Gold Glove winner, and a first-ballot Baseball Hall of Fame inductee.
His journey from Suffolk County fields to baseball immortality reflects the American values of work ethic, loyalty, excellence, and determination.

Today, on what would have been his birthday, we celebrate the life, leadership, and countless contributions of a truly good man—our friend, mentor, and former Chairman of both the Brookhaven Town and Suffolk County Republican Committees, John Powell.

John dedicated himself to our community with selflessness, integrity, and a deep commitment to public service. His leadership helped shape our party and our region, and his legacy continues to be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

Today, as we remember John on the anniversary of his birth, we hold his children, family, and loved ones close in our hearts and prayers.

ON FATHER’S DAY, GOVERNOR HOCHUL SHOULD VETO THE DEMOCRATS’ STUPID “GESTATING PARENT” BILL

“As families across New York gather this Father’s Day to celebrate the men who proudly answer to the title of Dad, Democrats have decided to celebrate the occasion in a very different way: by advancing legislation that would replace the word “father” in state law with the term “non-gestating parent.”

“Yes, seriously.

“Apparently, after failing to lower taxes, make New York affordable, secure our communities, fix our roads, improve our schools, or address the illegal migrant crisis, Democrats finally found an issue they were willing to tackle: the words “mother” and “father.”

“The legislation replacing those terms with “gestating parent” and “non-gestating parent” is not progress. It is not modernization. It is not solving a single problem facing New Yorkers.

“It is woke political theater at its most ridiculous.

“On Father’s Day, I have a simple question:

“Has anyone ever walked into a backyard barbecue, looked at the guy standing over the grill, and said, ‘Happy Non-Gestating Parent Day’?

“Of course not. He’s Dad. Just as Mom is Mom.

“For generations, mothers and fathers have been the foundation of strong families, strong communities, and a strong society. These titles are not offensive. They are not exclusionary. They are badges of honor earned through love, sacrifice, responsibility, and commitment.

“While families struggle with soaring utility bills, crushing taxes, unaffordable housing costs, and feel less safe because of soft on crime laws, Democrats continue to devote their energy to political activists.

“On Father’s Day, Governor Hochul should stand with moms, dads, grandparents, and families across New York and veto this misguided legislation.

“Unfortunately, I am not holding my breath.

“Governor Hochul has repeatedly demonstrated that she is more interested in appeasing the far-left activist wing of her party than listening to common-sense New Yorkers. This bill is just the latest example of how out of touch Democrats have become with the priorities of working families.

“It is also another reminder of why New Yorkers need a new direction and why Republicans are united behind the effort to elect Bruce Blakeman as our next Governor.

“New Yorkers need lower taxes, safer streets, affordable housing, and economic opportunity—not an assault on Moms and Dads.

“On behalf of the Suffolk County and Brookhaven Town Republican Committees, I wish every father a Happy Father’s Day.

“No matter what Democrats choose to call you, you will always be Dad to us.

“And if Governor Hochul and her far left extreme allies locally and in Albany have a problem with that, they know where to find me!”

On behalf of the Executive Committee, Committee Members, elected officials of the Suffolk County and Brookhaven Town Republican Committees, and our nine town Republican organizations, we extend our warmest wishes to all fathers on this special day.

Fathers play an indispensable role in shaping the next generation. They teach responsibility, integrity, perseverance, faith, and respect. Through their hard work, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment, they help build strong families—the foundation of safe, prosperous, and thriving communities.

Today, we proudly honor the men who work tirelessly to provide for their families, guide their children, and lead by example every day. To all the fathers throughout Suffolk County and beyond, thank you for your dedication, your sacrifices, and your enduring love.

President Ronald Reagan beautifully captured the essence of fatherhood during a 1986 radio address to the nation:

“Fatherhood can sometimes be walking the floor at midnight with a baby that can't sleep. More likely, fatherhood is repairing a bicycle wheel for the umpteenth time knowing that it won't last the afternoon. Fatherhood is guiding youth through the wilderness of adolescence toward adulthood. Fatherhood is holding tight when all seems to be falling apart, and it's letting go when it is time to part...Fatherhood is long hours at the blast furnace or in the fields, behind the wheel or in front of a computer screen, working a 12-hour shift or doing a six-month tour of duty. It's giving one's all, from the break of day to its end, on the job, in the house, but most of all in the heart...”

Those words remain as true today as they were four decades ago.

On Father's Day, we join Americans across our nation in thanking our dads for the labor, love, values, and legacy they pass on to their children and grandchildren. Their contributions strengthen not only their families, but our communities and our country.

America 250: Long Island Helped America Reach the Moon
Long Island helped carry America to one of the greatest achievements in human history.
At Grumman’s Bethpage facility, engineers and workers built the Apollo LEM, also known as the Lunar Excursion Module, the spacecraft that carried American astronauts from lunar orbit to the surface of the moon and back.
When Apollo 11 landed on July 20, 1969, the mission represented more than scientific success. It reflected American courage, innovation, teamwork, and the determination to do what once seemed impossible.
As America approaches its 250th Anniversary, the Lunar Excursion Module reminds us that American exceptionalism is built by people willing to reach higher, solve harder problems, and push the boundaries of freedom, science, and exploration.

America 250: Juneteenth and the Promise of Freedom
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3 announcing the end of legalized slavery in Texas.
More than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the news of freedom reached more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans in Texas, making Juneteenth a powerful reminder that liberty must be proclaimed, protected, and lived.
As America approaches its 250th Anniversary, Juneteenth calls us to remember the promise of freedom at the heart of the American story.
Here on Long Island, African American history includes stories of struggle, freedom, land ownership, community building, and cultural preservation, including Suffolk County landmarks such as the Mary E. Bell House in Center Moriches, which honors 19th-century African American land ownership and the central role of women in Black communities on Long Island.
