🙌VOLUNTEER SHOUTOUT🙌

Michael Biggs saw graffiti at the summit of Mt. McLoughlin, and knew that it needed to go. He reached out to our own Amalie Dieter, and she provided the tools to get the work done. (Elephant Snot is a thing, you guys.) Michael and two friends shlepped a LOT of things to the top of the tallest peak in southern Oregon, including the water needed to rinse at the end.

"That was a long HARD day with very heavy packs. We probably spent three hours on the summit scrubbing. We actually ran into another climbing friend, Steve, and he pitched in. We welcomed his extra set of arms! We got 90% of the mess cleaned up, and might go up another time with a little bit of stuff and get a couple spots. But it looks 100% better."

Thanks, you guys! We appreciate you!

Huckleberry Mountain Ceremonial Closure Update:

The temporary, 10-day area closure around Huckleberry Mountain to support The Klamath Tribes ceremonial practices will begin August 22 through August 31, 2026. This small area will be closed to the public during this time.

Pursuant to the American Indian Religious Freedom Act, The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and the Cultural and Heritage Cooperation Authority, the Forest Service is required to ensure access to National Forest System lands, to the maximum extent practicable, by Indians and Indian Tribes for traditional and cultural purposes.

The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest coordinates annually with the Klamath Tribes by temporarily closing a small portion of the High Cascades Ranger District to allow for this culturally important ceremony to take place. While huckleberries are traditionally part of those ceremonial practices, there are other culturally significant plant species that are recognized during this time.

"The area of Huckleberry Mountain was used by the Klamaths for subsistence and medicinal gathering. The Klamath families would stay at Huckleberry Mountain for over 30 days as the berries ripened to gather huckleberries, wild blackberries, strawberries and medicinal plants during the season to can and process the berries. Huckleberry Mountain was and is an important place, ethnographically and for gathering to the Tribes." -Chairman Ray

WILDFIRE UPDATE - 08.16.2026 3:00 PM

🔥 The Frog Fire ( #240) is contained at this time. The fire is located approximately one mile north of Mt. Emily, just south of the Oregon/California border. Four firefighters rappelled the fire and constructed saw line around the perimeter. The single dead-standing tree (snag) that was struck by lightning was taken down after helicopter bucket drops were used yesterday to reduce heat and the risk of embers spreading fire outside the line. Mop up will be completed this afternoon to eliminate any remaining area of heat within the containment line. This will be the last report on this fire unless significant change occurs.

Air and ground reconnaissance will continue throughout the coming days across the forest, working to detect any fires resulting from lightning storms that have moved through the area.

WILDFIRE UPDATE - 08.15.2026 9:30 AM

Firefighters from Siskiyou Mountains and High Cascades Ranger Districts are out patrolling this morning to located several cloud-to-ground lightning strikes that impacted the eastern side of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest.

Last night, one new fire was detected by aerial reconnaissance and firefighters from the Siskiyou Rappel Crew were inserted into the Frog Fire ( #240).

🔥 Frog Fire ( #240) located approximately one mile north of Mt. Emily just south of the Oregon/California border. Four firefighters rappelled the fire last night and constructed saw line around 80% of the perimeter. One dead-standing tree (snag) was struck by lightning and is burning near the top of the tree along the ridgeline. The burning snag was too hot to fall without risking fire spread from embers or firefighter injury. The tree will be taken down this morning after helicopter bucket drops have cooled it. Firefighters on scene overnight found some small spot fires resulting from embers and extinguished those and mopped them up. Once the tree is down, rappellers will mop up the entire area and eliminate any remaining heat.

Additional ground resources are working to locate any new starts in areas where lightning strikes have been identified. Air and ground reconnaissance will continue throughout the day. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

A new 🚩Pacific Northwest Fuels and Fire Behavior Advisory 🚩has been issued by NWCC Predictive Services in conjunction with state and federal partners effective August 11, 2026.

Subject: Record low winter snowpack and ongoing drought have left live and dead fuels critically dry across the Northwest, resulting in accelerated curing and enabling aggressive fire behavior even without strong alignment of fuels, weather, and topography.

Summary:
• Low snowpack across much of Oregon and Washington has contributed to ongoing drought and critically dry fuels.
• Live fuels are contributing to increased fire behavior.
• Active fire behavior with longer burn periods are occurring, with continuous rangeland fuels allowing rapid rates of spread when winds align.
• Fires are showing extreme resistance to control, requiring substantial ground and aerial resource commitments for longer duration.

The full advisory can be viewed athttps://gacc.nifc.gov/nwcc/content/pdfs/Fuels_and_Fire_Behavior_Advisory_PNW_0811.pdf
