We are saddened to hear of the passing of Randy Bates, a longtime Farmer Director of the Delaware County Conservation District. Randy served on the District's Board of Directors for 18 years, continuing the legacy of his mother, Anne Bates. His joyful presence and dedication to his community will be sorely missed but fondly remembered. ✨

We're feeling the effects of smoke from wildfires this week. Here are a few tips to protects your health!

🌫️ Smoke in the Air? Here's How to Protect Your Health.

Wildfire smoke doesn't have to be nearby to affect the air you breathe. Even smoke from fires hundreds of miles away can lower air quality and make it harder to breathe, especially for children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with heart or lung conditions.

Tip of the Day from the DCHD!

Here are a few simple ways to reduce your exposure:

🏠 Stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed when air quality is poor.
🌬️ Set your HVAC system to recirculate and use a high-efficiency filter if your system allows.
💨 Use an air purifier or create a cleaner air room in your home.
🚫 Avoid adding indoor pollution by skipping candles, incense, smoking, va**ng, and high-heat cooking.
🏃 Limit outdoor activity until air quality improves, especially strenuous exercise.
🚗 When driving, keep windows closed and use your vehicle's recirculate mode.
😷 If you must be outside for extended periods in smoky conditions, wear a properly fitted NIOSH-approved N95 respirator. Cloth masks, bandanas, and dust masks do not protect against wildfire smoke.

📱 Before heading outside, check your local air quality at AirNow.gov or use the AirNow app to stay informed.

If you have asthma, COPD, heart disease, or other chronic health conditions, make sure you have enough medication on hand and follow your healthcare provider's recommendations during smoky conditions.

Cleaner air means healthier lungs. Stay informed, stay prepared, and take steps to protect yourself and your family. 💙

DCCD attended the Lawn to Meadow Conversion training yesterday hosted by Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts, Inc. (PACD) at the Cumberland County, PA - Conservation District Office. This was a great educational workshop on how to establish meadows, accompanied with a tour of a completed meadow project! We're so excited to keep learning about meadows and help our Delco community implement more of these beautiful habitats.
A huge thank you to Ryan Davis, the Senior Forest Projects Manager at Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, for leading this training!
